In 1251 a market charter was granted by King Henry III of England to John de Huddleston, Lord of Millom. Millom is a coastal town on Cumbria’s south-west coast in the beautiful district of Copeland. Located just a few miles from the Lake District National Park boundary the town sits on the Duddon Estuary and is home to a host of independent retailers, cosy cafes, traditional pubs, The Beggar’s Theatre and a water sports lake. Being on the coast the town is a great place to enjoy fish and chips. Millom is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of the townships forming the Manor of Hougun which had been held by Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria. [2]

The Whitehaven & Furness Junction Railway opened a station in 1850 known as 'Holborn Hill Halt' until Millom new town was built in 1866. Millom School is a secondary school and sixth form, for pupils from 11 – 19 years old. It houses the adult education centre, an all-weather sports pitch and the " Melvyn Bragg Drama Studio" which was opened in 2005.
