I have seen a room containing only an old bedstead in the very last stage of dirt and dilapidation, a table, and two deal boxes for seats. The floor and the window-sill were rosy with magenta match-boxes, while everything else, including the boards of the floor, the woodwork of the room and the coverings of the bed, was of the dark grey of ingrained dust and dirt. The trade of making match-boxes at home is, I trust, a dying one; but as, alas! there are still hundreds of women and children engaged in this occupation, I should like to tell the readers of the MOTHERS’ COMPANION a little about the hardships connected with the work.

Posted on 22/11/2023 10:38:50 Berlin Game (1983) set the scene; Mexico Set (1984) takes the series to the next level; and London Match (1985) moves it up yet another notch. A wide range of affluent singles from their early 20s to early 80s who are looking for a significant relationship. Cost Much may be done among themselves to improve their condition as to wages, yet much more might be done by an earnest, philanthropic public desirous of practically carrying out towards them the urgent commands of Christ, the great Philanthropist, to help and care for the poor and neglected wherever found.” I had been told that some girls were for a little time on show at the People’s Palace, making match-boxes in the presence of the public, and that they made at the rate of twelve gross a day.

The Mayor has been clear over his concerns on the impact of Covid-19 on businesses if appropriate funding and support is not in place and continues to lobby the Government during this crisis. Many businesses cannot access the Government’s support schemes because of the way they have been set up, and others are struggling even to access funding for which they are eligible. This proposal therefore forms a key part of the Mayor’s response to supporting London’s economy through the current crisis, of which the LEAP and Growth Hub are vital elements and trusted channels of support. The original Wembley Stadium, known as the Empire Stadium, was built as the centrepiece of a British Empire Exhibition a few years after the First World War, and was first opened in April 1923. It would serve as the focal point of English football until 2000, being demolished in 2003 to make way for the current structure. Another difficulty is that many women have no clear idea how many gross they make in a day, or how much money they take in a week.

The first source is an illustration showing match workers protesting about a tax on matches, 24 th April 1871, by William Douglas Almond and second source is a photograph entitled ‘Members of the Matchmakers’ Union’ at the Bryant and May factory, 1888. These sources enable students to think about the face value of two different types of visual evidence as well as explore the connection between the two sources. Earlier in 1871, women had shown their agency in protesting about the impact of a match tax on their living conditions. The photograph from 1888 shows they were taking steps to protect their rights at work and had formed a match worker’s union. Not enough businesses apply for match funding for it to have the desired benefit on London’s economy

BETTER TIMES AHEAD?

Len Deighton's Bernard Samson series is getting better with each installment. London Match, the third in the nine-book spy saga, feels like what I imagine Deighton intended it to feel like: the end of the beginning. There are a ton of unanswered questions, and the ones that are answered form new wrinkles. Meanwhile, the stakes intensify and the spy vs. spy war between London and Moscow gets more brutal than the simple game Samson believed they were all playing.
