Still, I like this image, and I wanted to share the results you can get with UltraMax when shot or developed in less-than-ideal conditions. Kodak in America is upping their hiring by quite a bit so I am quite hopeful they’ll be pumping out more film for a long time. But as film shooters, we get to choose each time we load film; plus, there’s some value in narrow DR/high-contrast films for the look you can get with them. Our Kodak Ultramax 400 film review wraps up the 35mm films included in the Analogue WonderBox Film Subscription for October. Fortunately the photography business has survived under the Kodak Alaris name - based in Hertfordshire, England - and they have delighted the analogue industry by pledging continued support for film production and the promise of bringing back old favourite emulsions.

Compared to the ColorPlus 200 and Gold 200 which has an ISO rating of 200, UltraMax has an ISO rating of 400 and is faster by a whole stop than the former two. The Ultramax offers enough crispness to satisfy while being much better value than it's full of herself sister, Portra 400.Though not as fine-grained as those professional-level films, it’s certainly got enough resolving power to make sharp and smooth images. If you consider that you need to spend money on SD cards, power, computer stuff, software licenses, external file storage, web storage and all the time you invest sitting in front of Lightroom I rhink digital is way more expensive as a single role of film. The new packaging will say that the film is made in the USA, which is unlikely (but possible) to be produced by the rapidly downsizing Fujifilm paper factory .

For complete instructions on how to read film characteristic curves and derive dynamic range from lux-seconds, read this . Like most Kodak, its warm tones make it good portrait film and it’s strong saturation works well for landscapes as sell. Since UltraMax is already sensitive enough, you can use your lens at higher f-stops and with the camera set at a faster shutter speed.I’ve successfully zipped it through the autofocus speed machine that is Nikon’s F4, and painstakingly ratcheted it across the film gate of an old-as-dirt Contax. Since 1976, we have developed literally millions of rolls of film with experienced lab professionals and film enthusiasts. Greater ISO means that the images produced by UltraMax are not very smooth like the professional and more expensive Provia or the Ektar. As I mention in the accompanying YouTube video - Ultramax 35mm is a wonderful 'middle-ground' film that is great at many things without excelling in a niche, unlike the more expensive Portra or Ektar.
