Description

The Rhind Papyrus certainly gives us no sense of maths as an abstract discipline through which the world can be conceived and contemplated anew. But it does let us glimpse - and share - the daily headaches of an Egyptian administrator. Like all civil servants, he seems to be looking anxiously over his shoulder at the National Audit Office, eager to ensure that he is getting value for money. So there are calculations about how many gallons of beer, or how many loaves of bread, you should be able to get from a given amount of grain, and how to calculate whether the beer or the bread that you've been paying for has been adulterated. In other words: "Buy me, and you can't go wrong". The numeracy of the Egyptians, honed by works like the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, was widely admired across the ancient world. Plato, for example, urged the Greeks to copy the Egyptians, where ...

Mesmerising new stories of a sprawling ancient multicultural society with colonial ambitions became accessible with the decipherment of hieroglyphs. Travellers and traders from the ancient Mediterranean to the Indian subcontinent came to Egypt, bringing their languages and cultures with them. Some left a profound and lasting impression on Egyptian culture and its writing system. But it was the introduction of Greek that would eventually lead towards the abandonment of ancient Egyptian scripts. The concept of time Making papyrus is laborious but in fact, quite straightforward. The plant itself - a kind of reed that can grow to about 15 feet (or 4.5m) high - was plentiful in the Nile Delta. The pith of the plant is sliced into strips, which are soaked and pressed together to form sheets - very conveniently, the organic fibres of papyrus were meshed together without needing glue, and the sheets are then dried and rubbed smooth with a stone. Also, maybe I had a really sheltered childhood. I mean, I had brothers, and boys on the street I played with every day, but we never had the need to show each other our bits every five seconds. I am sure we did and went, well that's odd, and moved on. What is with the overt sexualisation of children in every second book I read? I understand that teenagehood is a western construct. I understand there is a thin line between kids and adults in many cultures. I understand that a lot of kids in many cultures around the world live in the same room as their parents sex life. I think we see the beginnings of a realisation that mathematics is not about specific numbers, about specific problems; that you can extract from it general procedures, general rules, that you can follow in lots of cases." (Clive Rix) One of Armagh’s most historic buildings has risen from the ashes thanks to the multi-million-pound Armagh Townscape Heritage scheme – a partnership project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and building owners.Schweblin is good at depicting the destabilising effects of grief and absence. Occasionally a story misses the mark or is too ethereal to fully satisfy, but her fractured worlds make compelling reading.

Investing in heritage means investing in the community it belongs to, which is why we are proud to support the Armagh Townscape Heritage Project, thanks to National Lottery players. This will not only preserve and rejuvenate the important built heritage in the city to be enjoyed by locals and visitors from further afield, but will also play a significant role in boosting the local economy and aiding the wider regeneration of the Armagh city region.” On completion, your solicitor will arrange for the monies to be transferred to our solicitor. Along with this they will also arrange the transfer deed and all necessary documents relating to the property to be handed to your solicitor for safe keeping.

The Seventh House is commonly referred to as the House of Partnership. With this house, we see a shift away from the self toward another — a partner. By cooperating with and relating to another we unite for the purpose of achieving something. Purpose is important to the Seventh House — the act of accomplishing something great or small for the self, the partnership and even society as a whole. In uniting with another, we also become a more valuable member of our world: we make a contribution, one small cog in the wheel of life. We have purpose. Cooperation and partnership help to expedite our purpose in life. Colourful hieroglyphs captured the attention of medieval Arab travellers as they explored ancient temples and tombs, particularly from the AD 900s onwards. Describing the mysterious writing as the ‘letters of birds’, most probably due to the frequent appearance of bird signs, Arab scholars hoped to uncover the secrets of ancient sciences and magic. Some used hieroglyphs as cryptic codes for the Arabic alphabet, while others consulted local Coptic speakers, searching for a way to understand the ancient texts. Interest from Europe

Aegon's half-brother, Orys Baratheon, slew Argilac the Arrogant, the last Storm King from House Durrandon. Orys married Argilac's daughter, Argella Durrandon, forming House Baratheon of Storm's End, the youngest of the great Houses of Westeros. [5]

The framework through which the seven houses are presented, as the sub-subtitle "Luminist Architecture" makes clear, is luminosity. For Holl, an architect far from shy about is love of natural light and means of incorporating it into his designs, the luminosity of his houses finds a synergy in American landscape paintings from the 1800s, as he spells out in his introduction to the book. Holl delves into the notion of luminosity a bit more in the interview with Philip Jodidio after the presentation of the seven houses, but it's the photos, drawings, models, and watercolors of the latter that are most convincing argument for Holl's continued experimentation in residential architecture. Spreads: In ancient Egypt, being able to write was a key to success as only about 1% of the population were literate. Those who were unable to read or write employed scribes to draw up contracts, letters and wills. Not all scribes mastered hieroglyphs, as the script was typically reserved for formal and religious monuments. Instead, many learned hieratic and demotic, the cursive scripts used in everyday administration. Family and society Bištāsef (Vishtaspa) appointed seven persons to the highest ranks, and they were the magnates, [including] Nihābiδa, and his residence was Dihistān in the Land of Jurjān (Hyrcania); and Kārin the Parthian ( Qārin al-Fahlavi) and his residence was Māh-Nihāvand (i.e., Media); and Sūrēn the Parthian, and his residence was Sejistān (Sakastan); and Isfandyāδ the Parthian, and his residence was Ray.
