Is it worth the upgrade? For a videophile, unquestionably. For more casual viewers, since the Blu-ray is identical in every way other than video quality, it’s a release for Last Starfighter super fans only. Incredible Odds: Writing The Last Starfighter (1080p; 00:09:27) – an interview with screenwriter Jonathan Betuel Grain reproduction isn’t perfect, but not far from it. Spikes in the source’s grain structure can introduce noise, if limited. Mostly, Last Starfighter maintains the filmic look, untouched by digitally introduced flubs. In that case, resolution can produce superlative sharpness, and detail pops in close. Medium shots look just as elegant in their definition.

This 4K Ultra HD release of The Last Starfighter comes with the same three audio mixes as Arrow’s 2020 Blu-ray release and they sound just as good. One is a stereo mix in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, one DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, and a DTS-HD Master Audio 4.1 mix originally created for the film’s 70mm release and never included on any home video format before the 2020 Blu-ray release from Arrow. Arrow’s edition (first printings at least) also comes with an O-sleeve featuring their new artwork along with a fold-out poster featuring the original poster art on one side and the new artwork on the other.

I found the presentation to be quite good in terms of its use of dynamic highlights which offered appreciable specular detail. In general, when present onscreen, those elements made for visually compelling use of vividly bright elements.
