But how can graded readers amp up language learning? Let’s take a peek at how graded readers are structured. When someone asks “can you read?” it seems like a yes or no question. In truth, appearances can be deceiving. You’ve probably heard these words floating around but might not be sure exactly what they mean: Intensive reading involves putting a lot of effort into understanding a difficult text over a shorter period of time, while extensive reading involves spending a longer period of time reading something that doesn’t take as much effort. Some readers come in the form of a guided reading text, where English boosts you along as you get familiar with Japanese kana and kanji. There may be full-on whole text translations set side-by-side with the Japanese text. The first half of the book may be in Japanese and the second half in English.

Their stories are written in large, clear font with pictures to help you connect meanings. Even their 0 level stories have kanji with furigana. This is great if you’ve been learning kanji and don’t want a wall of hiragana (which can be harder to read.) Well, it's time to get to reading!
