Description

This was LAIKA Studios’ first feature-length major motion picture and it holds up well in 4K beside other iconic animated films from the decade before like “Toy Story” (1995) or “Shrek” (2001) in comparison to CG (computer-generated animation) companies and their first films — in that case of those two as examples: Pixar and DreamWorks. So, as you can tell from the comparisons above there is an excellent amount of newfound detail here in 4K resolution, especially with the addition of HDR (high dynamic range) which breathes new life into this 2009 film.

Wybie”), Teri Hatcher ( “Mother” and “Other Mother”), John Hodgman ( “Father” and “Other Father”), Ian McShane ( “Mr.The film doesn’t have an animation style that will blow you out of the water in terms of razor sharp details, but the new 4K UHD disc looks really revealing and maximizes what you can see out of the textures and stop motion devices. Much of the film’s power derives from the dissonance generated by off-screen sounds or subtle shifts in the deceptively cheerful musical score, and the new soundtrack brings such elements into sharper relief without steamrolling the speakers with added roar. The role fell to Dakota Fanning, just fourteen at the time of recording her lines, but already an accomplished actress with spectacular turns in Man on Fire (2004) and War of the Worlds (2005) to name but two. The movie comes from digital source materials which were shot using the Nikon D80 and Red One digital cameras.

Audio Commentary – With director Henry Selick and composer Bruno Coulais, which is a bit of a misnomer, as Coulais’ only portion is during the end credits. Voiced by the wonderful Keith David who manages to inject a silky menace, and even when he can’t talk, you can still understand what he is trying to say. Coraline delivers a brand new 2160p UHD 4K transfer with Dolby Vision HDR and it looks the best it ever has. It is a highly dynamic track, with plenty happening, surrounds are used to give some nice ambient effects and used to fill out the score. The film holds up incredibly well and the audio and video is of excellent quality making this a fantastic release across the board. Based on Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novella of the same name, Coraline is a deceptively light story of a young girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning, who sounds ridiculously like her younger Sister Elle here)who has just moved into a remote apartment “house” out in rural Oregon.
