Description

Matt Brown's idea for the book was directly inspired by a similar map of fictional places in Britain that he created for Londonist. Atlas of Imagined Cities takes 14 world cities, including London, and plots the homes of hundreds of fictional characters — from Del Boy and Rodney to Count Dracula to Mrs Dalloway. Upside-down mountains, volcanoes that spew bubble gum, a gentle humpback whale keeping an entire city afloat. Characters' homes, bars, clubs, metro stations and skycrapers that you've seen or read about are all plotted in in beautiful vintage-style city maps. Fascinating and beautiful, this is an essential book for any popular culture fan and map enthusiast.

In addition to the maps and the accompanying essays describing the twisty logic that the authors used to finally pin point where these famous locations from fiction are (most likely) located, the Atlas also includes an extensive index along with map coordinates so it is easy to find a particular someplace on the maps (although I think you’ll agree that a magnifying glass is essential equipment for reading these thousands of entries). A new book, co-authored by Londonist's editor-at-large Matt Brown, maps thousands of locations from movies, TV, novels, video games and other fictional works.

At the more literary end is Valley Fields from PG Wodehouse and Ham - the island from Book of Dave, formerly known as Hampstead. For example, in Wales, we find Cackle’s Academy, a mountaintop school featured in Jill Murphy ’s The Worst Witch series and disguised to non-magic folk as the ruined Castle Overblow, whilst a few mountaintops away is a rival school of magic operated by Miss Pentangle, and this is only a short flight on a broomstick from Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children on Cairnholme Island. Phileas Fogg could pop across the road into Grace Brothers, and dalmatians Pongo and Perdita could easily be spooked by the Invisible Man. Here can be seen Antillia, a phantom island reputed to exist in the 15th century and which was depicted on several maps at the time. From Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot to superhero Wakanda, from Lilliput of Gulliver’s Travels to Springfield in The Simpsons, a wondrous atlas of imagined places around the world.

This map includes locations from two animated movie franchises: the kingdom of Arendelle from Disney's Frozen and the Barbaric Archipelago from How To Train Your Dragon. The one that showed about 1,000 fictional British places from film, TV, novels, comics and video games? From Stephen King's Salem's Lot to the superhero land of Wakanda, from Lilliput of Gulliver's Travels to Springfield in The Simpsons, this is a wondrous atlas of imagined places around the world. Londonist editor-at-large Matt Brown, and co-author Rhys B Davies, have taken the concept to the entire planet in their Atlas of Imagined Places.Detail from the map of Eastern Europe, including a large section of European Russia and the Baltics. Another surprise for me was seeing that Winnie the Pooh’s home is next to where the Animal Farm revolution occurred.
