An excellent book about the principles and functions of economics, which are very easy for the lay-economist to digest. There’s enough information here to enable you to make sense of Chancellors’ budget statements and to evaluate how likely their measures are to be effective. However, my main gripe with the book - and the reason for dropping a star - is how the jargon was structured. Newer terms, such as 'sub-prime mortgages' are explained well, as are older standbys like 'externalities'. Economics concepts can often be difficult to grasp, but the authors have done an admirable job of explaining them in plain language … This is one of the few books on economics that works as a textbook while remaining actually readable!
