About this deal

In his commentary, Brett Morgen primarily discusses his methodology in making the film and how he went about trying to create a “cinematic interpretation of Bowie. Cover Notes: From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen, director of Cobain: Montage of Heck, and featuring never-before-seen concert footage, MOONAGE DAYDREAM is an immersive cinematic experience; an audio-visual space odyssey that not only illuminates the enigmatic legacy of David Bowie but also serves as a guide to living a fulfilling and meaningful life in the 21st Century. It would have been interesting to hear why he focused on the portions of Bowie’s life that he ultimately chose, and illuminating to discover why he felt other equally acclaimed moments were deemed unworthy of inclusion.

Will compare Bowie's blu ray playability with Criterion's blu ray release (30 Jan 2024) of Dee Rees's "Mudbound" and will update.By acting as if Bowie’s career finished decades before it actually did, Morgen limits the film to repeating imagery and material that have been better covered elsewhere, while denying viewers the poetic finish that Bowie himself orchestrated for his life and career. First, Bowie was an introverted person who sought solace because it stimulated his mind and too much of what he did when the cameras were not around remained veiled in secrecy. While Morgen’s kaleidoscopic editing seems a promising approach at the start, his utilization of the same bag of tricks again and again becomes less illuminating and rather monotonous by the time the film limps to the finish line. glides through different eras of the musician's life, avoiding the rules of the genre to achieve a more appropriate understanding of the subject.

Moonage Daydream weaves in more familiar footage—interview segments and clips from his stage and film performances—with previously unseen concert performances, alternate takes of songs, and other such archival material. There's nothing wrong w/the Philips blu-ray player; otherwise the Criterion HS wouldn't play, nor would my other Criterion blu-rays. Indeed, it is edited in a way that makes very large sections of the film look as if they were prepared for a gigantic MTV video or special program. The purposely neon-hued color grading is consistently vibrant, while the dynamic range of colors only further intensifies the film’s hypnagogic tendencies. And yes, you are right, the same can be said about several other iconic musicians and actors, like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and James Dean. There’s rarely a moment of quiet, with songs and effects creating an active soundscape that surrounds the listener at nearly all times. While this hasn’t stopped anyone from doing so (see 2020’s disaster Stardust), Bowie’s estate has done very well with sticking to the late singer’s wishes.
