Battle Bunny is a schizophrenic book of fabulous proportions, and although Jon Scieszka, Mac Barnett and Matthew Myers all do great work, it is Alex who deserves ALL the praise. No longer is Bunny all fluffy and kind, now he has a flak helmet and a rocket launcher strapped to his back.

The first day I tried reading the book aloud on my own--- alternating between the original text and Alex's.The old world shattering hit the regular citizens hard by the looks of it, and it's taken up to know for them to build up their military industry and organize their ranks. He illustrated two books, one in the old fashioned “Golden Book” style we all are familiar with and one in the illustrations of a small, defiant, talented book vandal!

If you want, you can read "Birthday Bunny" to more tender-hearted children like my daughter, all the while enjoying "Battle Bunny" silently to yourself. For the young lad I have bought this for, I know he'll love the irreverent humour and jokes throughout this "pre-vandalised" comic masterpiece. Guess Again mocks the guessing game picture book, Count the Monkeys does the same with counting books, and Chloe and the Lion makes fun author/illustrator collaborations.Both the original Birthday Bunny and Alix’s adaptation are so convincingly realised, down to the illustration style and colour palette of the ‘original’ and its frayed edges, and the naïve anarchy of the inscribed story, that I can imagine unwary library staff being dismayed at the inspired felt pen crossings out and additions.

He is also a nationally recognized reading advocate, and the founder of Guys Read – a web-based literacy program for boys whose mission is "to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers. Bought for my Grandson, did find it disjointed because of the way it was written, he enjoyed it ,definitely not a favourite at present.

Battle Bunny looks for all the world like a run-of-the-mill, bland and slightly sentimental early reader which its boy owner has outgrown and which he has imaginatively and extensively altered to tell a story that he finds much more exciting and in which he has a starring role.
