I love the Victorian era so this gets extra points for taking place during that time and also having fantasy elements, which make it even better. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. Her sharp mind is constantly questioning the world around her and is not satisfied with half truths. When the station master takes pity on Seren and speaks with her as she stomps around the platform, trying to stay warm, he inadvertently gives her another option.

The crow keeps her safe from them, telling her not to look behind her and she runs up the stairs towards the lighted window where they think Tomos must be. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. When a very tall stranger entrusts her with a strange parcel wrapped in newspaper, tied in string, Seren is confused. Von dem wunderhübschen Cover habe ich mich wie magisch angezogen angefühlt, es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick, und auch der Klappentext sprach mich direkt an. I thought the clockwork crow’s sarcastic and grumpy attitude perfectly balanced Seren’s emotionally charged character and enjoyed the dialogue shared between the two of them. The housekeeper eventually tells Seren that “Tomos went out of the house for a walk after breakfast one morning, and he never came back…. The possibility of her first happy family Christmas seems like it might finally be within her reach. The story is rich with the sense of old magic and fairytale, yet a totally original and particular bit of storytelling.

Other settings were full of gentle strangeness that made me close my eyes to try and imagine myself within them. Seren won’t stop until she’s uncovered the mysteries of the magical crow and Tomos’s disappearance, and then she heads off on a quest to save him. Seren is surprised by a tall thin man in the Lounge, and even more surprised at how afraid he seems of something outside…something she hadn’t seen in all her time outside waiting. I feel like I do such a great job (usually) at picking books I love and that I can give 5 stars to but I just can't bring myself to it on this one.The Clockwork Crow is a gripping Christmas tale of families and belonging set in snowy Wales from a master storyteller. She arrives at their home in Wales to find everyone in the family missing and no logical explanation given to her.
