Christian Convery, of Sweet Tooth fame, and Brooklynn Prince are fairly amusing in their respective roles and Kari Russell, who plays things mostly straight, is fine in her part. They’ve been robbing tourists in the area for some time now, much to the dismay of a park ranger named Liz (Margo Martindale). But it was a sufficiently goofy fun time to have us more fondly remembering the classic films it reminds us of than bemoaning the waste of a title that the Sam Jackson and Asylum peers certainly had us doing. For the week that ended on April 29th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Jesus Revolution topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The blood is an epic red that spurts in many places and the black levels of the bear and the darker scenes look inky and rich.

Finally, Doing Lines features various members of the cast and crew performing mock-dramatic readings from the script. The corpse of the bear was later taxidermized and put on display, and while it may have been stolen at one point, it supposedly was rediscovered as a part of Waylon Jenning’s private collection in Las Vegas.

Its beautifully gonzo moniker, and its stunning admission that it is in fact ‘based on real events’, caused all manner of fan fiction expanded universe sequels featuring other animals on other forms of narcotics (‘Heroine Badger’ was my favourite) to be the scuttlebutt of the internet prior to its release.

It’s a good encode, too, with not much in the way of noise or other compression artifacts to mar the experience. But the cast really do give it their all and inject massive amounts of fun and charm into their performances. Yet the actual success of the film really starts and ends with its influences and its subsequent choice of what kind of film it wanted to be.
