Description

As someone who often struggles to really ingest academic writing, but who has a keen interest in social issues, the way that Bergdorf has so expertly combined her own story with such beautifully constructed discussions of the relevant issues absolutely shone through to me. Munroe regularly consults for global FTSE 100 businesses for their inclusivity and diversity schemes, including the world’s largest beauty brand, L’Oreal Paris, where she sits on their UK Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board to influence and inform the brand and be a voice for black, trans and queer community. Bergdorf offers critical insights, which are informed by her experience as a British, black, queer, transgender woman on institutional racism, queerness, surviving sexual assault, family reconciliation, and community formation. Exploring change as an essential part of human experience and the fluidity of identity and relationships, as well as sexuality and gender, Bergdorf’s empowering book speaks compellingly of transition as an experience every person faces in every phase of life. The first trans woman of colour to model for L’Oreal then subsequently dumped when she spoke out about racism - only to get them to apologize and re hire once people actually began accepting that systemic racism is and has always happened .

And so I was excited to see she had a book available in the US (much of her work is in the UK), especially since it is Pride Month.

Munroe remains committed to using her platform to champion diversity and create lasting change in the beauty industry and beyond. It’s often said that it isn’t being trans that is especially difficult; it’s other people’s perceptions of our transness and the way that these feelings are projected onto us that for many makes life feel unliveable, that makes us feel unlovable. Bergdorf herself notes that she did not recognize some of these dynamics until the passage of time/in retrospect, etc. I always find it difficult to critique someone's memoir when it's their life, and they have chosen where to draw the lines in terms of sharing.

She also referred the UK peer Emma Nicholson to the Parliamentary Standards Conduct Commissioner, for her posts on social media about the trans community. Summer break had arrived and the last thing I wanted to do was spend it twiddling my thumbs in Essex, so I got a job on the door of a drag club instead. Whether it's growing up and coming of age, reacting to the things that happen to us, learning from our mistakes, dealing with trauma or finding love, we all evolve. It was an “incredible” feeling, she said, to have 11 publishers bidding to publish it, and she was “blown away” by Bloomsbury’s associate publisher Alexis Kirschbaum, who eventually acquired it in what the publisher said was likely to be the biggest book deal for a black, trans woman. She documents this loneliness as she transitions from a young gay man to a famous trans woman model. When Teen Vogue wrote of Munroe Bergdorf “She’s a powerful and unstoppable force and the world should take notice” back in April 2018, they were right. In it, she will argue that transition is an experience every person faces in every phase in life, “and that only by recognising this can we understand times of change”.

Bergdorf presents a very interesting memoir/manifesto about her life and how all humans 'transition', whether through age, gender, sexuality, purpose etc. I feel like we need to widen how we see ourselves, and widen how we see each other, because then you realise that we all want the same thing. Just as she emerges with a contract, she is embroiled in controversy for speaking out on racism and standing in solidarity with the people of Charlottesville. As I started to look more ‘feminine’, I also started confusing sexual objectification with validation. S. have been whipped up into a frenzy of hate via misinformation: It’s not the least overdramatic to say there’s a war on trans people right now. The book will explore the history of gender throughout the world, including Polynesian, Indian and Native American cultures that recognised more than two genders before the colonial era.
