About this deal

The mechanics are simple and intuitive, and there's just the right amount of abstraction to balance playability with simulation (in this case, of things that never were). Troop types and units are defined by their fighting characteristics rather than by race, weaponry, or individual prowess. This was an encounter I was unfamiliar with, with newly crowned King Edward sending an embassy to the Scots only to be ambushed by the Lancastrians.

Forces can vary wildly in size, from a Lion Rampant-sized side of 40 to 60 soldiers to a dozen or so more powerful creatures. Bellicose Foot operate entirely differently from Heavy Foot or Elite Foot for example, so there's lots of flavour, even before you start tweaking the profiles with optional and fantasy rules. So the system of unit upgrades that work in Lion Rampant tend to create some very homogeneous units in Dragon Rampant. In this game Tony’s captain would get killed by a pack of velociraptors, meaning Tony lost his crew and will have to start all over again.

And given that my historical interests lie in the early medieval period (13 th century is where my real interest lies) then I thought to myself, ‘let’s imagine the elves as if they were present in 11 th century Britain’. Right away, this adds an interesting dynamic in that there is now strategy on what to activate first and a fear of having to give the turn over to the opponent. The Dragon has almost always been a symbol of the Britons, mostly known today in Wales, but also in other Brythonic parts of Britian, such as the West Country. In addition to Must Contain Minis, I would like to share with you two other places that you can find my content. I have played a few games of Lion Rampant and, aside from the activation system which I will discuss later, it is actually a fun set of rules for the period that it covers.

However, with the use of Strength Points for units your leader could be a single model, a small retinue, or a regular size unit of troops that he happens to stand with. There are those where you min/max a top tier army list within a restricted range of expansive models using a complex rule system and a dozen supplements according to a changing metagame. For example, my goblin fanatics and squig hoppers (units that in the original WHFB were always unpredictable) , if they fail an activation shoot off in a random direction (with the help of a scatter die) and may end up attacking whatever unit they slam into. Before determining the spell effect, the Game Master had me roll to determine what effect the altar would have on my spells. The background to this unit is that in my shire, units are recruited from certain types or areas of work. Until comes "That player" who spent hours crunching numbers to optimize their list so they can stomp you in the first 2 turns of the game with their expansive top tier models.
