The wounded wire of the low C is a little loose at the end of the string, this allows the string to fit in any hole at the saddle. If you decide to go this route, I recommend these strings for a guitalele with bridge pins and these for one without. That really wasn't much of a choice though because currently the D'addario Folk Nylon strings and the Aquila Nlygut Guitalele strings were the only advertised options at my disposal.

If you’re an electric guitar player you may not be used to a thinner string but it’s worth considering the tension on the guitalele’s neck. I tried them one after the other and aside from measuring with a mircrometre that the bass strings were slightly thinner than the folk nylon - You would be fine to use these as a direct replacement for factory strings on any guitalele. Of course I was aware of the solution you advise (regular string set from A to B tuned a fourth higher plus an extra hard tension low-E) but I don't feel at ease with four wound strings under the fingers.First impression: changing from generic factory strings or whatever was on them, previously tuned to around G (i. o. is absolutely thrilled with the new sound (and his favorite color happens to be red like the basses). This fit with the official Yamaha FAQ web site, which has two recommendations about strings for the GL-1. BTW, going back to my 650/52 after an afternoon with this 432/48 GL-1, my full size CG felt absurdly large!

Constructed to fit your guitar-ukelele hybrid tuned A to A, these strings will fit most models that are equivalent to a 1/4 size guitar. That's the only way I can make sense of all the references to folks putting hard or extra hard classical strings on their guitaleles tuned to A. Please don’t just recommend a specific string set without some information as to why you choose / use them?

But even if your guitalele does have a truss rod, it likely won’t sound quite right with steel strings because the instrument wasn’t designed for them.

You can play guitar songs on a guitalele as the guitalele strings are tuned in the same intervals, however, you need to be aware that the guitalele is tuned the same way as a guitar with a capo on the fifth fret. It may be confusing at first as these nylon strings can be used with guitar, however, they will also be a great choice for your guitalele and will hold their tuning really well and cope with the tension exerted on them.

If Aquila could manufacture a ukulele or guitalele set that had wound bronze strings for the bass and the reds for the trebles I think they would have a very unique sounding and popular set of strings on their hands. So, preferring lighter strings in general on my guitars, both steel and nylon, I decided to pick up a set of Pro Arte light tension strings (EJ43) which I have used on occasion before on my classical, though now use normal tension. It has 465 mm (18 5/16”) scale and I have no idea what kind of strings (tension/brand) it came with. You can actually put steel guitar strings on a guitalele, but the added tension on the neck could damage the instrument so it’s worth checking if it has a truss rod, otherwise, steel strings are a no-no!
