The more players you have, the more energetic the play can be – but in the end much as with Colt Express the stories remain largely the same even when the protagonists change. Yes, there is some luck involved in the dice rolls and card draws, but Jamaica isn’t a complete roll and move luck fest.

It isn’t very fiddly or confusing to control the ghost ship and it does a good job of adding a third player to the board. Usually, these treasures lie off the beaten path – rather than taking the shortest route around the island, you’ll have to make a potentially lengthy detour.

That popularity has also led to a new edition of the base game, now in a traditional 30cm square box. In the new version, you pay what you can and then you roll the shortage die and move back to the space showing on the die (port, sea, or pirate lair).

Yet, it doesn’t mean you’re completely out of the game yet either–because everyone has the same limited amount of action cards in their decks too. Up to six salty seadogs (erm, players) can join the race: one lap around the island, the game end triggering when the first ship lands back in Port Royal. So, she loads on five food into the hold (remember, it can only go into an empty hold) before sailing off into what’s sure to be an embarrassing blunder.Treasure cards are drawn from the appropriate deck and may include victory points or special powers.
