A great mix of Juno's experience transitioning from man to woman and her thoughts on gender issues and feminism. The Gender Games traced Dawson’s dysphoria back to her early childhood in the Yorkshire town of Bingley, “famous as the birthplace of the Damart thermal underwear empire”. I have only recently stumbled across Juno Dawson as an author as I heard on a podcast about her new book Meat Market which is a book I intend to read. This book is a memoir of her experience being brought up as a boy and living as a gay man before realising she was trans, as well as a wider discussion about how gender norms fuck us all over. To be fair to Dawson, this is entirely standard for the gender ideology espoused, but that doesn’t make it make sense.

It explains how your gender can have an impact on your life, what it means to choose your own gender identity and the importance of gender equality. This would also be a good starting point if you know someone with a good sense of humor who wants to know more about trans people and trans experiences, or if you just want to read someone funny talking about gender and sexuality. I think for me though, I've read numerous superior texts on gender, rights and psychology, so I feel as though the subject has already been covered for me. Yes, she explains things very well, always making it clear other people have and have had other experiences, and explains the impact of societal gender norms very well.Levitt Stuart Lawrence Stuart MacBride Stuart Turton Sue Bentley Sue Mongredien Sue Turton Sujata Massey Susan Calman Susie Hodge Susie Williams Svend Brinkmann Svetlana Alexievich Swapna Reddy T. You may continue to explore the site in this browser, but most interactive features will not work as expected. After graduating from Bangor University, [3] she worked as a primary school teacher and later became a PSHE co-ordinator. In her autobiographical book The Gender Games, published in 2017, Dawson described a lifestyle in which sexual risk-taking became a damaging form of self abuse. First and foremost, she is at pains to point out that she is not the designated transgender spokesperson and I liked how she runs through the book comments and thoughts from other transgender people (including the actress Rebecca Root), which adds perspective (and I should point out that she also quotes feminists such as Laura Bates and Hannah Witton).

In her review of Dawson’s memoir, Steph Burt corroborates the vitality of fantasy and creation in her own experience of being transgender, writing that ‘I did this for thirty years, mostly in published verse; it could feel like a code no one bothered to crack’.She tackles some pretty serious subject matter in a very light and humorous way, and this is not a difficult or heavy read at all. It made me snort with laughter at points, made me think about my voice and what I can do with it and gave me insight into issues outside of my personal sphere.

I don't agree with her views on women's magazines offering good things as I think they are still far too focused on celeb culture, stereotypes, diets, image etc.The Gender Games by Juno Dawson shows you her life before she Transitioned and how her life started through the coming outs and as she Transitioned. I've read many books and essays on the subject so was interested to see what this author had to say about it.

Ultimately, I think the tone helps with the overall design of the book, which is aimed not just at trans readers but for everybody else as well. Before our names, before we have likes and dislikes - before we, or anyone else, has any idea who we are. I was absolutely a product of Section 28, which became law the year I went to primary school and was revoked the year I went to university. Topics covered include gender stereotypes, why there are different toys for boys and girls, being intersex and transgender, cross-dressing and gender around the world.

I was quite keen to find out more about Trans issues and being Trans, and I thought this sounded like it would be a great start point.
