I had an encounter with a granite rock on the toe with a lefty shot attempt, and it actually held up pretty well. I never thought I would get to the point of being a golf ball snob but I’ve seen the positives for the higher quality balls vs the lower. The Kirkland Signature wedges are not forged clubs, so don’t expect butter (that’s down a different aisle in Costco).

Compared to other wedges I’ve recently hit, it felt as though there was less mass behind the ball, despite the club head being the same size. They have had great success with their golf ball, golf gloves and putter, and have even teased releasing a Kirkland Signature hollow-body iron set. Lots of rain around here lately, so bunkers are not in the best shape, but it is a good sand wedge (and most of the problems have been mine, not the club’s!

Offering tremendous value, Costco’s wedges — the Kirkland Signature three-piece set, also provides surprising feel and performance. Low bounce for hard pan and creating divot, medium bounce for most conditions, and high bounce for special situations. The Kirkland wedges would be well suited for a higher handicapper looking to take their game to the next level. He currently runs Golf Insider UK, Sport Science Insider around wider consulting and academic roles in sport performance and motor control. It’s really not a huge deal, but I figured I’d mention it because it was my biggest gripe with the club set! A single-digit handicap, he’s been playing competitive golf since childhood, and recorded three holes-in-one by the time he was 13. Three concerns: (1) the plastic cap above the hosel on the 52 came loose pretty quickly, but went back in place easily; (2) they seem to show signs of wear in the groove lines already (although I have been giving them a pretty good workout); and (3) I have noticed occasional damage to the cover of my golf balls that seems to have come from the sharp grooves on the wedges. This is going to be great for durability, but the downside is that it really reflects light when you are trying to hit a shot, which can be distracting. The only fault we can pick with the Kirkland wedges is that they don’t come in different flex options.

This further investment into golf equipment and the desire to upgrade products like wedges only means good things for consumers looking to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to gear. The lower bounce and grind on these wedges mean these wedges sit flush to the ground on tight lies and allow you to open up the face and hit higher cut and lob shots when you need to. In testing, these wedges lost 6-12 yards on a full wedge shot compared to my Mizuno wedges with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts of the same loft, lie and length. This is doubly surprising because Costco’s other Kirkland Signature club, the KS1 putter actually has a SuperStroke grip on it. To achieve an overall uniform feel and consistency, a proprietary carbon steel formula and quality materials are used in the construction of the Kirkland Signature wedge Set. Although they don’t exclusively sell golf equipment, Costco and its Kirkland Signature brand is still one of the biggest and most recognizable brands in golf. For instance, if you had a shot from the rough, a tight lie, to a short pin, or to a long pin, can you hit the shot you need to? No matter what your exact equipment preferences, every golfer wants a set of wedges that look superb both in the bag and behind the ball.

FWIW, I have found that my Kirklands actually fly farther than my Titleists did (almost 10 yards), so I’d hit some shots before getting it bent. True Temper makes a lot of the steel shafts found in golf clubs; some of the models include Dynamic Gold, Elevate, and AMT. It is important though for the game of golf to be affordable, it needs to be inclusive and not exclusive. If you have used the free gift then it should be kept and the value will be taken off the balance that will be given back to you. Part of the reason is that these shafts are a little more flexible than I am used to, but even when hitting a 50% or 75% wedge shot there feels too much going on in the shaft, resulting in vibrations coming up into the grip of the golf club and a little less control. At 52*, 56* and 60*, the wedges almost fit perfectly in the gap department with my 45* PW / 50* AW of my trusty Titleist AP1 910 irons. The Cleveland and KS wedge performed about the same, except the Cleveland flew a bit higher and landed a little softer. The Honma did not even come out of the bag for this one, because I know I cannot hit a full swing with it.
