For this review, I purchased a brand new Makala Dolphin MK-SD/CAR (the CAR stands for “Candy Apple Red”). While I don’t like to see brass frets on steel-string instruments like guitars, uke strings are so soft that it’s not something I worry about. I also feel like the Dolphin has less sustain and resonance than Kala’s other budget-friendly instruments like the KA-15S.

These similarities are unsurprising as the man behind Kala, Mike Upton, started the company after leaving Hohner, Lanikai’s parent company. In fact picking it up today it never ceases to amaze me how full and loud a sound these things can deliver. NuBone is a harder, denser material than plastic and will (in theory) transmit more of the strings’ vibration to the body of the uke.The Makala MK-S from Kala is a decent ukulele that I would recommend to anyone looking to get started on a budget. The Rosewood fingerboard adds a touch of luxury, ensuring a smooth and comfortable playing experience. All impressions are based on the how the uke performed “out of the box” with no tweaks or adjustments.
