It's taught and witty thanks to distinguished dramatist Hugh Whitemore's delightful script and as comforting as a warm blanket, a stodgy tea and a roaring fire on a winter's evening. It is somewhat different to the original BBC series with characters such as Mrs Hall having a more important role. Superb performance by the cast of the new updated series, The first show in 1978-1990 was ok, but it didn’t get the characters right as described by the books, Siegfried was too old, and Tristan, the first Helen, and James were not on the mark. It's based of course on James Herriot's phenomenally popular tales of a vet's life in the Dales and spawned a long-running BBC series with a different cast.newcomers, the highly efficient bookkeeper Miss Harbottle (Neve McIntosh – Shetland) and studious undergraduate vet student Richard (James Anthony-Rose – Slow Horses, Pennyworth). And now, "another one" (Yorkshire folk's welcome for the new assistant James Herriot, when he started his job with Siegfrid Farnons rural surgery) - not a better one, but also interesting, humorous, enjoyable.
