In this story, the landscape and animals of Kapiti Plain have suffered greatly due to a lack of rain. This book has strong links to geography (African geography, wildlife and understanding concepts such as drought), history and exposes children to African folktales.

A traditional tale filled with rhymes and repetitive texts which portrayed the Kapiti plain beautifully. The pictures show a bit about the way of life of the Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania including the traditional red clothing that helps identify the men as Maasai and the elaborately and colorful beaded collars. But the story begins with a 10 line introduction and the middle 6 lines of the introduction have unstressed endings. The second fairly obvious observation is that the format of the story, the cumulative or House-that-Jack-Built format, works well for this tale in which each thing is directly related to the next.

This is good for children who grew up in a wealthy industrialized society where clean water is available at the turn of the tap.
