About this deal

It was commissioned in 1979 by Southern Television, when British life was once again in a state of flux. It was greatly expanded for the first revised edition as Written for Children: An Outline of English-language Children's Literature (1974) and updated for its 2nd to 4th revised editions in 1983, 1987, and 1990 – the last, "A survey of imaginative writing, including poetry and picture books, accompanied by a bibliography of works on children's literature and illustrations from many of the classics of children's literature through 1989. TV drama series set in a time of social and economic collapse where hyper-inflation has lead to food shortages and mass riots. While not glossing over Norman’s blinkered stolidity, the book does at least try to explain how a person might end up that way, and I have my own memories of 1970s fathers not unlike him—relics of the deep programming of WWII, a psy-opped religion of sacrifice and discipline—who ran their houses like army bases and bossed their children around like recruits. O love all the songs on this amazing album, howevet this particular one sticks out to me while stoned on chem•de-la•chem walking beneath the twilight clouds and setting the mood with this fabulous album I've been coming back to again and again with a topic I talk often of. While this book was fascinating partly because it is a window into some of the pessimistic ideas floating around in the '70s, the book itself is a bit dull and predictable. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Not a massive stroke of good fortune earned through the sufferings of our forebears (and a lot of other poor bastards worldwide who weren’t our forebears); just something you get. Though contemporary YAs are likely to find it quite tame and mild, it still is a good EOTWAWKI tale, and a very revealing examination of the mindset, morals, mores and gender roles of the mid-seventies British middle class. Alright if you have any intention of reading this book, at anytime, please don't continue to read the review.

The dank shadow of WWII still hung heavy: youth clubs were held in ex-WAAF canteens, traces of Anderson shelters still poked through back gardens, and even thriving towns far from London displayed the exposed second-floor fireplaces and diagonal walls that were the badge of having been bombed by German planes. The site carries no advertising, and I rely on donations to help with running costs and to keep the site running for your entertainment and education. He spends the entire book making belittling comments about Barry's mother and older sister Nessie, mostly about their inferior, womanly minds. The Mortimer children are shocked by their fathers behaviour and argue that food should be fairly distributed to all those who need it. It would be nice to think that father figures as deluded and controlling as Norman no longer exist outside of fiction, but it’s a fair bet that they do, though they perhaps have adopted a subtler portfolio of techniques. I've seen a few reviewers not be able to get past the father's attitude, so think it's important to keep things in context.
