About this deal

We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there’s something for every literary palate. Wonderland believes in the agency and power of the cards; Alice says, “You’re nothing but a pack of cards”. Her punk attitude is more alive now than in the movement's seventies' heyday and her outspoken, Union Jack-waving Englishness (with a few added safety pins and tea stains), is undiminished. It's a fantasia as opposed to a flop, a nuance and not a nonsense, and while it riffs off a young child's frustration at not being able to play chess (among other things), it is one perfect remove from the real world – via the imagination of a child (as perceived by a gent in his late 30s) into a surreal landscape, with even more bizarre characters than before.

The Green Transition Weekly analysis of the shift to a new economy from the New Statesman's Spotlight on Policy team.Featuring an all-Black cast, the shoot starred model Duckie Thot as Alice in baby blue and platform heels, and drag superstar RuPaul as a magnificently imperious Queen of Hearts. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. She hopes these additions will underpin the “timeless” elements of the book and “fix it in the present moment”.

The designer has collaborated with publisher Vintage Books to crate the design and introduction for an anniversary edition of Alice in Wonderland, her favourite children's book. Overall I really love this edition although it is a lot more low-key than a lot of other editions including the Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Edition (which I own).Grace Coddington, former creative director at American Vogue, described it as an “exhausting, exhilarating” and “magical” shoot, and Vodianova brought a combination of wide-eyed innocence and sulky humour to the photos that seemed to befit a contemporary understanding of Alice. They make you believe you could be in a parallel world – or that the world we think we know reflects the way we are programmed to see it. It being long out of copyright anyone can put together a 150th birthday edition for it, but this is one of the more distinctive efforts, for it comes with the help of Dame Vivienne Westwood. This anniversary edition also includes « Through the Looking Glass » and the original Tenniel illustrations. These designers are not alone in having been inspired by the extraordinarily imaginative world created by Carroll.

Alice Through the Looking Glass by Emma Chichester Clark presents the sequel in great fashion for the very young. Tiny crockery, vintage props and sweet treats fill the table, capturing the magic and mysteries of Wonderland. The special edition includes Carroll's other Alice novel, Through the Looking Glass, and original illustrations by British artist John Tenniel. WWD reports that the English fashion designer, who was inspired by the tale to shape up her Fall/Winter 2012 collection, has teamed with Vintage Classics for this special gift edition of Lewis Carroll’s tale of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. To understand Westwood’s ideas, however, it is best to begin at the end, at the point when her introduction comes to a close. This “perfect fit” quality of the cover contrasts with the strangeness of the other major features of Westwood’s anniversary edition. In fact, wonderland has been a rich territory for many generations of designers – and the fashion world, in turn, has shaped our understanding of Alice and her coterie of characters. Featuring daring sets, VR experiences, and a whole host of Alice-related objects from handwritten manuscripts to stage costumes, the exhibition charts Alice’s origins, reinventions and extensive cultural reach over the past 156 years. She had previously been spurred on by the pace of the action, but in a moment of sober reality sees things for what they really are. We believe we are living in a democracy; Westwood says “there is no chance of immediate democracy in England”.
