The film won multiple awards: Bavarian Film Awards, German Film Awards, the Golden Screen (Germany), Havana Film Festival, and Robert Awards (Denmark), the German Phono Academy, and the Guild of German Art House Cinemas. In 1993, the book was adapted into a film ( The House of the Spirits) by Danish director Bille August. She and her uncle Marcos use her powers to run a fortune-telling centre as she develops other paranormal activities like dream reading. In parallel, the story of Esteban Trueba begins, the central male character, whose brutality and cruelty are brought into sharp focus through his treatment of his land tenants. The House of the Spirits is an enthralling saga that spans decades and lives, twining the personal and the political into an epic novel of love, magic, and fate.

Shortly after this, Clara's sister, Rosa the Beautiful, is killed by poison intended for her father who is running for the Senate. Esteban is finally visited by Clara's spirit, who has come to help the old man on to the next world.

Angle Errigo of Empire gave The House of the Spirits two out of five stars and stated that: "If this had been a Latin American production, one might have been more generous towards the fumblings of a fairly fetching saga; given the talents involved, the film's hesitations in style and consistent failure to really move must be counted as a major disappointment. She has written numerous bestsellers, including The House of the Spirits, which catapulted her to international fame.

Isabel Allende constructs a spirit-ridden world and fills it with colorful and all-too-human inhabitants including Esteban, the patriarch, a volatile and proud man whose lust for land is legendary and who is haunted by tyrannical passion for the wife he can never completely posses; Clara, the matriarch, elusive and mysterious, who foretells family tragedy and shapes the fortunes of the house and the Truebas; Blanca, their daughter, soft-spoken yet rebellious, whose shocking love for the son of her father’s foreman fuels Esteban’s everlasting contempt, even as it produces the grandchild he adores; and Alba, the fruit of Blanca’s forbidden love, a luminous beauty and a fiery and willful woman.

Allende weaves a tapestry of love, power, and the supernatural, exploring the complexities of relationships and societal upheavals. She is made the prisoner of Colonel Esteban García, the son of Esteban Trueba's and Pancha Garcia's illegitimate son, and hence the grandson of Esteban Trueba.

Clara decides to never speak to him again, reclaims her maiden name and moves out of Tres Marías and back to the city, taking Blanca with her. The names Nívea, Clara, Blanca, and Alba are more or less synonyms, and this is mentioned as a family tradition. Esteban, desperate to save the family honor, gets Blanca to marry the French count by telling her that he has killed Pedro Tercero. Chile, the country in which the Trueba family resides, is undergoing significant political upheaval. Despite this demonstration, the Virginia county’s school board voted not to ban the novel from school curriculum.Gradually—and I have no idea how it happened, so I can only credit Allende for some kind of magic—it all coalesced and began to make sense. Blanca is also able to earn large amounts of money for the first time by selling her clay figurines, which are seen as folk art by Canadians. For instance, in Virginia, a parent initially brought attention to the novel’s explicit content in 1997 by passing out “packets of excerpts from The House of Spirits with the heading “Would you allow your 16-year-old daughter to read this material?
