About this deal

When you read the blurb of this book, the plot may seem template based on the surface, but the fluency and the make-believe manner, in which he describes the common sights, sounds and smells that surround us humans re-scaled from the sensory viewpoint of the canine is one of strengths of the book. This book was a real departure from other James Herbert books which are known for as being horrors, written in a gruesome style.

If I spent most of the time reading your review wondering when Fluke was going to come across a bitch, that probably says more about me than about Herbert. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. He has strange flashes of memory: of another, much smaller, town surrounded by green fields; of a second mother, a human mother; of a much younger woman and a little girl in a house at the end of a narrow muddy lane.

I won’t reveal what happens at the end but Fluke now is determined to complete his odyssey back to his human family even though the badger he meets tries to dissuade him from doing so. Will usually dispatch within same working day if paid before 14:00 GMT (excludes weekends and holidays). Herbert can do short novels pretty well, as is evidenced most notably by The Rats, but this one was a bit of a failure, at least for me. Emanuel Levy of Variety stated, "The adventure doesn't pander to kids, though toward the end it gets overly emotional, milking every situation with lengthy reaction shots and cute closeups of Fluke" and "all three adults — Modine, Travis and Stoltz — otherwise accomplished and attractive performers, assume secondary status to the gorgeous dog and his loyal benefactor, Pomeranc.

I originally read this nearly thirty years ago and I vaguely remember not liking it as much as his other books but I felt like including it in my reading for the ‘1977 Club’ as I wondered what I’d make of it today. Along the way he meets some colourful characters and gets into all sorts of mischievous doggy trouble! In the first of the series they hear of the disappearance of a young wife and mother, who has vanished from her home, Chester Grange, leaving behind a room covered in blood. Each book is interwoven with the real biographical facts, and takes place over a few days – so it is possible to fit in a lot of detecting into their all too short lives. As he grow some of these recollections become more vivid and he goes looking for the life he left behind that he cannot quite remember. Wow, this book was an absolute breath of fresh air and a massive departure from the all out horror found in James Herbert's other novels.

I soon got to grips with his views on the world though, so I began to quickly understand what Fluke was talking about.
