About this deal
When stereotactic imaging is used, you will lie face down with your breast placed in an opening on the table.
Find out about breast cancer treatments, where and how you have them, and how to cope with possible side effects. Breast and nipple thrush (a fungal infection) may occur in the first weeks after birth, but can develop at any time. Fluoroscopy helps in the accurate location of such radiopaque foreign bodies and facilitates their removal [ 4].
Once the local anaesthetic wears off, your breast may ache and may be bruised for the next few days or weeks. After the doctor takes the sample, they put pressure on your breast for a few minutes to prevent bleeding or bruising.
You may be diagnosed with breast cancer after routine breast screening, or you may have symptoms that you've seen your GP about.
If a previous biopsy has not given a definite result and more breast tissue is needed to make a diagnosis, or if the area of concern is difficult to target, you may be offered a vacuum assisted biopsy. This is often the preferred type of biopsy if breast cancer is suspected, because it removes more breast tissue than a fine needle aspiration (FNA), but it doesn't require surgery. Sometimes, if the area of concern is small or difficult to see on a mammogram or ultrasound, a small metal clip (or marker) is placed in the breast where the biopsy has been taken. This can be done with the doctor either feeling the area or while using an imaging test to guide the needle.
