The amount of cooking time and water will vary, but rice cookers can generally deal with any kind of rice, including basmati, pilau, Jasmine and sushi rice. Are rice cookers worth it? The Microwave Bowl by Joseph Joseph is made from polypropylene and therefor especially durable, it is dishwasher-proof and microwave-resistant to up to 900 watts. Please note that the rice pot may be very hot when it is removed from the microwave oven. It is advisable to handle the pot after heating only with cooking gloves or oven mitts. Easy to Use Design– The rice cooker provides all the tools to simply and easily cook perfectly fluffy rice within the microwave. The basic function of a rice cooker is to keep moisture in and heat rice evenly, so the rice absorbs just the right amount of water, ensuring that it doesn’t get crispy or burned on the bottom of the pan. Electric rice cookers use ‘fuzzy logic’ technology, an advanced microprocessor that adjusts weight, water volume and temperature throughout the cooking process to give consistent results every time, while microwave rice cookers rely on exact amounts of rice and water being added. Are rice cookers good for all types of rice?

For steaming, we added more water than necessary to the bowl below the steamer then manually turned it off once the food was cooked. However, over time we could easily have worked out the right amount of water needed to get the perfect result. That would mean that once the water had boiled away the cooker would switch to the keep warm function as for rice. A rice cooker allows you to leave the rice cooking unattended and also keep your rice warm, meaning you can leave it covered for a little while without the worry it will go cold or need reheating. The best rice cookers can produce consistently great high-quality rice in a way that even those skilled with a saucepan couldn’t manage. Though a rice cooker may not be a staple kitchen gadget, for anyone who eats rice regularly – or wants to try cooking a wider range of Asian dishes – it’s an essential item. The resulting rice is fluffy and fairly well separated. We used basmati and short-grain and both came out well, although both did form a very thin crust – as do some of the more expensive heat-from-below rice cookers – but it was easy to break up and stir into the rest of the rice. Some cheap rice cookers will turn off the heating element once the boiling point has been reached and maintained for a set period; others will cease boiling once the weight of the bowl’s contents has decreased past a certain point, due to the rice absorbing some water with the rest boiled away as excess steam. At this point, your rice should be ready to eat.

Microwave cookers and some less feature-led models will give you well-cooked rice in about the same time as pan cooking. Some fancier models might even take a little longer. We found going by 60-90g of uncooked rice per person that three cups (450g) was more than enough for four to five. It cooks all kinds of rice, including wild rice. Although that should be cooked as a mix with basmati, as on its own it requires too much water. It’ll keep rice warm for up to a whopping 24 hours, and makes enough for eight hungry people. The verdict: Rice cookers

Most cheap rice cookers can only cook long-grain rice and even then only to a basic standard of quality. Basmati, the curry house staple we’re all familiar with, is a long-grain rice. Pricier rice cookers can handle other types – notably short-grain rice, the type used in risotto as well as Thai and Japanese dishes, and more unusual rice-based dishes using presets chosen from a control panel on the front of the rice cooker. What’s the best feature on a dedicated rice cooker? The least amount of dry weight rice you can cook in this machine is 2 cups, which is about 4-6 portions, making it a great choice for family dinners. If there are just two of you, then you can freeze the remaining rice once it’s cooled. Although it’s called a rice cooker, this also has a facility for steaming, and it can cook a simple risotto, too. You can’t cook less than three cups of rice so it’s probably not a good choice for those on their own. Unless you have freezer space for Tupperware-filled cooked rice. It is, however, good for families or dinner parties. It will prepare up to 1200g of uncooked rice, which provides, on average 18-20 portions. Crucially, if you’re a fan of fancy rice then this one isn’t for you as it only cooks white rice, but it does cook it very well and was one of the simples to use with the best results.
