About this deal

The languid piano, vocals and harmonies of Tears for Fears’ Rivers of Mercy ebb and flow, exhibiting air and rhythm, while Explosions in the Sky’s Wilderness drops deep, confirming a decent bass extension, all without comprising some sharp, synthy jangles. However, in every other respect the BT and SE editions are a match. Design, features and performance are identical. Battery life at 30 hours on both iterations is formidable, and Bluetooth implementation features aptX Low Latency, for better gaming and movie watching on the go.

The bass and treble are sufficient enough, sadly not that punchy to be felt in your throat. But overall, they proved great in every genre, I could hear the vocalists quite well and could tell in-between instruments without a problem. Microphone Quality?

The Sennheiser HD 450SE show promise but get in their own way

The less obvious feature attraction is Sennheiser’s Smart Control app, required to access specific audio presets or the customisable EQ. The app also reveals current battery status. The mids are impressive and the music comes loud and clear, you won’t miss any tone at all. What’s more, they don’t lose any richness even at higher levels, that’s a plus cause there’s barely any distortion.

It took me a while to get used to the buttons, they are all swamped together, I think they could have been placed way better. There are 4 buttons and they are quite small and hard to toggle. To make things easier for you guys who just got them or if you planning to buy them, I’ll go on and explain what they do: The Sennheiser HD 450BT uses Bluetooth 5.0 and supports a bunch of codecs: SBC, AAC, and even aptX and aptX low latency. Noise Cancellation Obviously, you will achieve better audio quality if using a wired set of Sennheiser headphones but that applies to all brands. And I was one of many in the game who, for years, chose Sennheiser above other brands generally for their audio quality. In a previous life as a working club and radio DJ, I regularly used the company's pro headphones as my weapon of choice.

It has also entered the more competitive mid-priced earphones segment too. You can read my review of its CX True Wireless here. The build of the new cans isn't as sturdy or premium as the Momentum 3 Wireless headphones, and the plastic construction can feel a bit flimsy at times. They have 32mm drivers and I’m a fan of the flat and nicely balanced tuning that delivers clear and precise audio across the musical spectrum. The battery life in one word is wonderful, with a battery life of 30 hours, 450SE get the chance to sit on the same table, with the “Big Dogs”, matching the stamina of the industry-leading ANC over ear headphones, the WH1000X M4.If there’s one word that sums up the HD 450SE, it’s balance. With no EQ applied, these Sennheisers present everything with an even hand. They don’t shy away from deep bass, but they never sound overly booming. Dialogue clarity is good, with zero sibilance. Like most audio products, the HD 450SE fell victim to the strong winds when I walked near a local river, but they did a decent job in these extreme conditions regardless — It mayhave sounded as though I were underwater but people could still hear me. Compared to the Momentum 3 Wireless headphones, the build of the new cans feels less premium and less sturdy: the plastic construction could even be described as feeling flimsy. The latter is ideal for watching movies and playing games without losing synchronisation between sound and vision.

Making a hard turn into classic R&B bangers with “Millionaire” by Kelis proves these work well across any genre. The more subtle mid-tones continue to have great representation amidst the bass punch. But the hi hats can sound harsh when the composition gets busy. Active noise cancellation is becoming a thing day by day and now most wireless headphones are noise canceling headphones. It is a killer feature that really reduces the ambient noise while providing the best audio quality possible. They’re also aggressively priced compared to similarly specified rivals. Are these Sennheiser HD 450SE cans the smartest headphones you can buy right now? Design In recent years I've watched Sennheiser win universal acclaim for their in-ear wireless headphones such as Momentum which are regarded as one of the best true wireless earbuds on the market. For the last couple of months, I've been comparing the best over-ear ANC headphones for non-Apple users, Sony's WH1000x M4, to Sennheiser's more affordable HD 450SE. As I mentioned earlier, it has a virtual assistant button for Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant to make things easier for you. Besides that, for simple usage, there’s also the Sennheiser smart control App that provides an equalizer, podcast mode, and firmware updates. Battery life is impressive, at 30 hours. I found I could easily manage a couple of days between charges. Sound Quality
