Timothy Zahn gave life to Grand Admiral Thrawn by releasing the original Thrawn Trilogy books in 1991. That was when Thrawn joined the Star Wars world as the so-called heir to the Empire. But because the entire continuity was changed with the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, the original Thrawn Trilogy is no longer canon. Still, Zahn wrote more about Thrawn in the canon books that were released after he was introduced as a canon character in ‘Star Wars: Rebels.’ And here are all of the Thrawn books released regarding publication dates. Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy (1991-1993) – Legends The trilogy allowed Lucasfilm to expand its non-film media into the mainstream, as opposed to the more niche comic book and role-playing game markets it was previously focusing on. [25] The success of the series prompted Lucasfilm to immediately commission more books to continue the Star Wars story. [12] Legacy [ edit ] But while ‘Heir to the Empire’ may no longer be canon, it still is one of the best books to read in relation to Thrawn and the mindset that he carried throughout his entire history as a character. The storyline takes place after the events of ‘Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi’ as there were rumors of Imperial remnants threatening to regain control over the galaxy under the leadership of a man named Grand Admiral Thrawn, who sought to lead the Imperials against the New Republic during a time when Luke, Leia, and Han had already helped bring peace to the entire galaxy by defeating the Empire.a b Crawford, Michael (January 18, 2010). Introduced in the Thrawn trilogy (1991–93), [3] [4] Thrawn became a fan favorite and subsequently appeared in multiple works in what became known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe, including novels, comics and video games, through 2006. [4] [5] [6] He is often cited as one of the most popular characters in the franchise. [5] [6] Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni said of the character in 2016, "You couldn't have grown up a Star Wars fan without encountering Thrawn in Heir to the Empire. It was a dark time when there weren't any more movies, and it blew our minds that there could be more." [5] [10] The Thrawn trilogy itself is widely credited with reviving interest in the Star Wars franchise. [16] [24] In 2010, Star Wars: The Clone Wars creator Filoni expressed interest in using Thrawn in that series. [25] Some fans of Zahn's Thrawn series had long hoped the books would be adapted, and after the 2012 announcement that The Walt Disney Company had acquired Lucasfilm and planned to produce film sequels to Return of the Jedi, Zahn commented that if material from the expanded universe was used in the films, "we'd all be thrilled to death". [24] My job–the sole reason for my existence–is to defend the Chiss Ascendancy and protect my people. I will do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal, and I will allow nothing and no one to stand in my way." ―Thrawn — Listen ( file info) [5] a b "Fiction Book Review: Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy: Dark Force Rising". Publishers Weekly . Retrieved July 21, 2016.A six issue [67] comic book miniseries adaptation of the first novel by Marvel Comics began in early 2018, [68] [69] and ended in June of that year. [70] After rising as a high-ranking officer within the Empire, Thrawn now has to work together with Darth Vader, who has seen the abilities of the Chiss Grand Admiral firsthand but is yet to truly understand whether or not he can be relied on. In that regard, they now have to work together in the Unknown Regions of space, where an unknown threat is now on the rise. Neither of them knows whether or not the consequences of this uprising can threaten the Empire but they do know that they have to work together to find out more about this “disturbance in the Force,” as Emperor Palpatine described it. Zahn's working title for the book was Wild Card, which Bantam vetoed because of its similarity to their other series, Wild Cards. Bantam also rejected his second favorite title, The Emperor's Hand. [21] Warlord's Gambit was also a potential title, but ultimately Heir to the Empire was chosen, which according to Zahn was suggested by Aronica. [21] [31] a b c Hoffmeyer, Corey (January 21, 2017).
