I liked the nostalgic homage to the story from the original film as well as the handling of the sentimental connection to Spengler (the late Harold Ramis’ character). Ghostbusters: Afterlife doesn’t have the entertaining narrative, witty edge, marvelous chemistry, and timeless appeal of the original but, I had fun with its host of references, interspersed cameos, and surface level gags/humor/banter. As a Ghostbusters fan I enjoyed revisiting the themes here and, was truly moved by the inclusion/tribute to Egon/Harold Ramis. This is definitely one that I will have fun watching again.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife isn't steeped in sensory overload, instead delivering a surprisingly rustic, rural setting with wide open ranges and vistas. It's a very different look from 80's NYC (undoubtedly a controversial change in and of itself) but it allows the film to arguably better tread the line between the original adventures and this modern instalment as, despite being set in the present time, the setting is more sympathetic towards an old school adventure (c.f. the blandly modern streets of Matrix: Resurrections). The 4K makes the most of these wider shots, absorbing cloud detail and landscape nuances, with a very lived-in feel to the whole environment (that house is a character in and of itself), and a balanced, natural colour scheme that gifts a richness to the brown-dominated scenery, seeking to enhance it rather than make it otherworldly with pop. and that a powerful, long-dormant evil exists just beyond the realm of reality where the family's destiny awaits.NEW: “ Ghostbusters: Behind Closed Doors” Documentary – a 90-minute documentary about the making of Ghostbusters and the history of the franchise! The film was shot with a specific visual aesthetic in mind and that comes through in both its 1080p and Ultra HD presentations. This isn't a colorful film however its palate of sepia tones and variants of blue/red benefited from UHD's wider color gamut, appearing noticeably warmer and pleasing to the eye. Resolution gets a boost with the differences between the UHD and 1080p renderings being appreciable. Close-ups tend to be better refined with resolvable texture on surfaces and physical features being easier to detect. Most all of the supplements, aside from a few trailers, are located on the Blu-ray disc. It seems that as technologically advanced as we are, we’re either unable or unwilling to put all the extras on one disc. And, of course, it does. Sony’s 2.39:1 HEVC 4K image is nearly flawless. There aren’t enough words in my vocabulary to explain all the little nuances, colors and all the things in between to showcase the picture. Contrast is spot on, detail is off the charts – if Paul Rudd ever decides to age, I’m sure a transfer like this would actually show a wrinkle or a grey hair (not so far, though). Let’s face it, Sony’s 4K offerings are among the best out there, if not the best. And this one is no exception. Audio: How’s it sound?
