And as the Lamanites had passed the hill Riplah, and came into the valley, and began to cross the river Sidon, the army which was concealed on the south of the hill, which was led by a man whose name was aLehi, and he led his army forth and encircled the Lamanites about on the east in their rear. Isa. 31:5; Alma 43:24; 61:14; Morm. 7:4; D&C 134:11. TG Family, Children, Responsibilities toward; War. Goldin was herself nearly a victim of the opioid crisis. In a piercing Artforum essay from 2018, she publicly revealed that she became addicted to OxyContin after it was prescribed to her following a surgery. When OxyContin was no longer enough, she took what she thought was dope. It ended up being fentanyl, and she overdosed. It’s a story that’s grown all too familiar. “I can’t stand by and watch another generation disappear,” she wrote.

And he also knowing that it was the aonly desire of the Nephites to preserve their lands, and their bliberty, and their church, therefore he thought it no sin that he should defend them by cstratagem; therefore, he found by his spies which course the Lamanites were to take. History has not “ended”, as Francis Fukuyama declared in 1989 (claiming liberal democracies had been proved the unsurpassable ideal). Instead, history has entered a ferocious era of uncertainty and volatility. In this, perhaps more than his other books and essays, Grant moves between big ideas in history – the Enlightenment, modernity and democracy – to consider himself, his identity, and his own lived experience of injustice, where race is an undeniable organising feature. Grant’s work examines the ideas that explain the West and modernity – and his own place as an Indigenous person of this land, from Wiradjuri, Kamilaroi and Dharawal country. That is: his work explores both who he is in the world and the ideas that tell the story of the modern world. He finds the latter unable to account for him. For behold, his adesigns were to bstir up the Lamanites to anger against the Nephites; this he did that he might usurp great power over them, and also that he might gain power over the Nephites by bringing them into cbondage. Let me just say, the spice is NEXT LEVEL. Almost to the point where I was craving more plot and less spice lol. I had not read the novella before this, so the whole storyline was new to me. I was eagerly awaiting more character development or more explanation to the mystery of Quin to the society….but don’t expect any real answers in this book. And they were pursued by Lehi and his men; and they were driven by Lehi into the waters of Sidon, and they crossed the waters of Sidon. And Lehi retained his armies upon the bank of the river Sidon that they should not cross.

Another case of fantasized violence (well, maybe—the novel is rather less clear about this than the film, but the popularity of the film has now passed the fact that it’s all in Bateman’s head into canon), but intensely detailed. First it’s just run-of-the-mill murder from a run-of-the-mill disaffected yuppie, but as the book goes on, it gets more and more horrible, with Bateman pretty much trying everything you might try with a human body, dead or alive. Yes, that. That too. The scene of Bateman eating the body of a dead girl, trying to cook with her flesh but finding it too hard because he really can’t cook and so instead smearing it all over the walls, and admitting that “though it does sporadically penetrate how unacceptable some of what I’m doing actually is, I just remind myself that this thing, this girl, this meat, is nothing, is shit, and along with a Xanax (which I am now taking half-hourly) this thought momentarily calms me and then I’m humming, humming the theme to a show I watched often as a child— The Jetsons? The Banana Splits? Scooby Doo? Sigmund and the Sea Monsters?” Ugh. Yeah, this was a roll of the dice. I take longshots sometimes when the mood strikes and this was one. It paid off this time, at least enough that I'll probably get the next in the series. Five words: The Part About the Crimes. Okay, a few more: the Part About the Crimes is the gruesome heart of 2666, the outpouring of blood without which none of the rest would exist. It recounts the individual murders of 112 women in Santa Teresa over the course of only a few years. It is fairly difficult to get through, which, I suppose, is part of the point. And the people of Ammon did give unto the Nephites a large portion of their substance to asupport their armies; and thus the Nephites were compelled, alone, to withstand against the Lamanites, who were a compound of Laman and Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael, and all those who had dissented from the Nephites, who were Amalekites and Zoramites, and the bdescendants of the priests of Noah.Imagine everyone's surprise when the recruiter shows up the next day and announces that he is there for Raven and not Greg. Raven’s parents refuse to let her go but have not choice in the matter as there would be dire consequences for anyone who refused. Poor, poor Greg is mortified as he was so looking forward to attending the elite academy. And they abegan to stand against the Lamanites with power; and in that selfsame hour that they cried unto the Lord for their freedom, the Lamanites began to flee before them; and they fled even to the waters of Sidon. The film does not sanitize the milieu from which these pictures were borne. Goldin lucidly speaks about the dangers of sex work, which she herself undertook. She performed as a go-go dancer in New Jersey, and later became what she calls the “dominatrix” of Tin Pan Alley, a female-run bar that drew an unlikely clientele of leftists, art-world types, queer people, and IRS workers. Goldin also reports that there was violence at home, courtesy of her partner at the time, Brian, who physically abused her. There’s a photograph of Goldin gazing into the camera’s lens, with one of her eyes bloodied, its lid the color of an eggplant; the image lingers with you. However, the choice is not his, because his partner has sniffed something other than cavity-inducing candy on the wind … While on the other hand, there was now and then a man fell among the Nephites, by their swords and the loss of blood, they being shielded from the more vital parts of the body, or the more vital parts of the body being shielded from the strokes of the Lamanites, by their abreastplates, and their armshields, and their head-plates; and thus the Nephites did carry on the work of death among the Lamanites.
