Calpol advises adults and children over the age of 16 to try Calpol SixPlus (suitable from six years). It contains paracetamol and is used to help with fever, colds, earache, sore throats and general pains. The risk of GI bleeding, ulceration or perforation is higher with increasing NSAID doses, in patients with a history of ulcer, particularly if complicated with haemorrhage or perforation (see section 4.3) and in the elderly. These patients should commence treatment on the lowest dose available.

Ibuprofen comes in a standardised 100mg per 5ml formulation, such as Calprofen or Nurofen For Children, which can be given to children aged three months or older and who weigh more than 5kg, with dosage depending on their age. Ibuprofen is a propionic acid derivative NSAID that has demonstrated its efficacy by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. In humans Ibuprofen reduces inflammatory pain, swellings and fever. Renal tubular acidosis and hypokalaemia have been reported in the post- marketing setting typically following prolonged use of the ibuprofen component at higher than recommended doses.

Babies and younger children (three months to six years old) can have a formulation containing 120mg per 5ml of liquid, while older children (6-12 years) can have a formulation that has 250mg per 5ml of liquid (e.g. Calpol SixPlus suspension). Tablets, capsules, effervescent granules, oral liquid medicine, modified-release tablets, orodispersible (melt in the mouth) tablets, chewable capsules The lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration necessary to relieve symptoms (see section 4.4).
