About this deal

I found the camping in the wild very adventurous. Especially when I read in an old newspaper that the police was looking for two thugs in the woods, the exact woods I was hiding. Good thing I read the news afterwards, otherwise I may have changed my mind. Bluesign approved Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse 2.5L / 100% Nylon, 30D ripstop upper / 100% nylon, 40D with TPU lamination floor / bluesign approved100% polyester mesh / single-pole system / reflective Logo and Trims / two stake loops / one guy line loop / high volume toe end / clamshell opening / two Internal fly fasteners.

We recently reviewed the OEX Bush Pro Bivvi and feel we have to include it in this roundup of the best bivvy bag choices. It represents fantastic value for money, and pushes the Highlander Hawk really close for the top spot if you’re looking to spend less. In our view, the hood system is slightly better in the Highlander Hawk, but with the OEX Bush Pro being substantially cheaper, it’s certainly a close run decision. It has an open-face style with a snap opening and stiffened peak. This is in contrast to the zipped face designs commonly found on most bivvy bags and Rab champion it as being less constricting. An integrated rain gutter manages precipitation effectively. The OEX Bush Pro uses a 5000mm hydrostatic head top layer for decent waterproof capability, but we didn’t test it under monsoon conditions. With a vertical spray of a hose pipe to replicate rain I was kept dry inside using the OEX in my garden overnight. I’mve been working hard to encourage people to get out and try a microadventure. Microadventures are a refresh button for busy lives. But I’mm very aware that the hardest thing is getting out there for the first time. So I have produced a few infographics which hopefully will serve to give people the prod necessary to take that first step. (Thank you, Andrea, for all your hard work!)

Thank You

When you’re ready to camp, the Ridge Raider is effortless to put up. Thread the 8mm pole through a duct in the head section of the bivi, a bit like putting up a dome tent. This then lifts the top of the bivi off your head meaning you can easily lie down and read a book, or even tend a stove located outside close by. Just slip it over your sleeping bag. If I am organised I do this before leaving home rather than doing it later in the dark and pouring rain. However, in an emergency situation, especially one that is wet and windy, a bivvy bag (or basic survival bag) can offer enough protection to save your life. For this reason, it is advisable that all trail runners carry a survival bag when running in high or remote areas – even if you’re not expecting to be out for long. Is a bivvy bag worth it? It’s certainly a distinctive product due to the high, clam-shaped opening at its head, which utilises a single arcing pole to create a high (for a bivvy bag) ceiling. This makes for easy entry and exit and gives the user plenty of head space – after all, no one wants a claustrophobic bivvying experience. And why on earth would you use one when tents exist? Well, such an approach – with your head open to the elements – offers an even more intimate interaction with the wild. The sounds of night creatures are unmuffled, the stars dazzle above you, and your senses are highly attuned to every raindrop and every gust of wind.

If you think you will use your bivvy bag regularly, for multiple nights, or if you are going to bivvy in more difficult conditions, here are a couple of really good breathable bivvy bags: Hi! I’mm Alastair, an adventurer and author. I invented the phrase #Microadventure and I’mve been shouting about it for a few years. You can follow the microadventures people are doing on social media here or say hello to me here. Bivvy bags are great for keeping the wind off and giving your bag a bit of extra warmth but I wouldn't use one in the rain unless I could keep the outer reasonably dry somehow. The price/weight of the more waterproof/breathable-ish bags make them not worth it to me as well as I'm more likely to use it in the dry so a waterproof one would inconvenience me 90% of the time and maybe make the difference between being wet and being soaked on the rare occasions it has rain use. Downsides are the same as for any bivvy of this kind. If it’s raining you can find yourself having to get into it when you otherwise wouldn’t with a small tent. Using a tarp can overcome that problem, and we would certainly recommend that if you think there will be trees to set it up. Alternatively bring along some poles for the tarp.Thank you for getting me out of the tent! Sleeping under the stars is wonderful! The open air makes one feel alive.
