About this deal

Set in a gorgeous old pile, and involving a whole House of Lords of wealthy aristocrats, including several very rich and (sigh!) very stupid gilded youth, "The Seven Dials Mystery" has plot enough for a dozen mystery movies. It might be considered a highly desirable area now, but Seven Dials’ history hasn’t always been so glamorous. I could be a rambler from the Seven Dials" is the opening lyric of Stephen Stills's 1991 song " Treetop Flyer". [ citation needed] Omniscient Council of Vagueness: The Seven Dials, whom, as a hidden Bundle observes, gather in a secret room, all wearing masks, to speak of the secret MacGuffin formula and their missing man. Fortunately, even though they don't know Bundle is listening, the masks and the pseudonyms and their vague talk don't let Bundle know that they're actually good guys and that two of them are personally known to her. In Terry Pratchett's 2012 novel Dodger, Seven Dials is the setting for much of the action and where the eponymous hero lives. [32]

For an author synonymous with cosy English village mysteries, Christie frequently ventured abroad and takes us with her. For instance, we can wander the nooks and passageways of an archaeological excavation in 1930s Iraq, thanks to Murder in Mesopotamia. For atmosphere and authenticity this title is hard to beat – Christie would accompany her husband on his archaeological digs and knew her sherd from her microlith – even if its plot stretches credulity. Famous largely for being Miss Marple’s first appearance in a novel, The Murder at the Vicarage sees thoroughly disagreeable chap Colonel Protheroe murdered, Cluedo-style, in his library, with a gun. Surrounded by villagers who all have an axe to grind with Colonel P, Miss M uses her famous nous to eliminate seven suspects. I’ve seen it dismissed as having dated poorly, but for me this is a funny, witty and sharply observed Christie classic. The next Friday, Bundle and Jimmy arrive at Wyvern Abbey and are introduced to the other guests including the Cootes, Sir Stanley Digby, Terence O'Rourke and the beautiful Hungarian Countess Radzky. Bundle is further surprised to see Superintendent Battle there. He tells her that he is at Wyvern to "keep an eye on things". Bill Eversleigh also turns up. Jimmy has told Bill what Bundle told him of the meeting of the Seven Dials. Realising that Sir Stanley is only going to be staying one night at Wyvern, they work out that any theft of the formula is going to be attempted that night and Jimmy and Bill agree to keep two separate watches, changing over at 3.00 am, both using a pistol that Jimmy has brought with him. Bunson, Matthew (2000). The Complete Christie: An Agatha Christie Encyclopedia. Gallery. p.421. ISBN 978-0671028312.In 1930, Christie married archaeologist Max Mallowan (Sir Max from 1968) after joining him in an archaeological dig. Their marriage was especially happy in the early years and remained so until Christie's death in 1976. By 1851 sewers were laid in the area, but poverty intensified in St Giles and in the Seven Dials, although the population began to decrease as workshops and breweries started occupying some of the houses. [9] The model developed by Margaret Frere was established here to support poor children in education; it was adopted throughout London for school social work. [10]

Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, came out in 1920. During her first marriage, Agatha published six novels, a collection of short stories, and a number of short stories in magazines. Distinguishing Mark: How Bundle realizes that Countess Radzky is actually No. 1, one of the Seven Dials that she saw at the secret meeting. The Countess and No. 1 both have the same mole. Countess Radzky, revealed later as the actress Babe St. Maur, regarded as highly suspicious by Jerry, Loriane and Bundle. At 2.00 am Jimmy, on the first watch in an alcove in the hallway, thinks he hears a noise coming from the library, a room that leads on to the terrace. He finds nothing in the room and continues his watch from there. To increase the desirability of the neighbourhood, they gave all of the streets fancy names, and built a massive sundial as a centrepiece. This had – you guessed it – seven dials (technically one was a column, but you get the idea), giving the area its name. This rather long adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel (which I haven't read) is pretty highly stylized -- one or two steps removed from Monty Python's sketch, "Race of the Upper-Class Twits." Not that there's anything stupid about these characters, except a few eccentricities. It's just that it's so awfully easy to imagine that the twits came from the kind of milieu we see here. A later novel, published in 1958, Ordeal By Innocence is a nagging, tragic tale of missed opportunity, a miscarriage of justice and family wrongs that can never be righted. It’s as much a psychological thriller as a murder mystery, with elements that make for uncomfortable reading. Christie herself cited it as one of her favourite titles.
