Description

The substance called 'Nothing' causes damage to things in the House and ultimately wipes it out when the Will is complete. One of the Trustees, Tuesday, makes various things out of it using his Key. The Piper creates an army of so-called 'Newniths' from it. X Must Not Win: Funnily enough, Arthur's side could be considered as X, since the other main combatants know that if he succeeds, the House will be destroyed. Not only are the trustees the 7 days of the week, it seems they represent the 7 cardinal sins (right now I am reading Drowned Wednesday which looks like it is about the sin of gluttony). If Harry Potter had been raised as a fundamentalist Christian, and someone gave him LSD, a story like ‘Mister Monday’ by Garth Nix might result. Especially so if he studied the myths surrounding King Arthur (originally an English Christian myth). The Call Knows Where You Live: Arthur initially ventures into the House looking for a cure for the Sleepy Plague, caused by the Nithlings sent to retrieve Arthur's part of the First Key.

Mister Monday is the first novel in the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. The other books in the series are: Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday, Lady Friday, Superior Saturday and Lord Sunday. Mister Monday is afflicted with the deadly sin of Sloth. The first part of the Will has managed to break free and, by convenience, has chosen Arthur as the 'rightful heir' who must recover the other lost parts of the Will; this has led to Monday giving up half of his Key to him. In the first book, Arthur defeats Monday and takes control of the first part of the House. Books two to five follow a somewhat regular pattern: in each, Arthur tries to gain control over one part of the House, and ultimately succeeds after various challenges, setting free one part of the Will. Each book features one main antagonist, usually the Trustee of that part of the House, with the exception of one Trustee who wants the Will to be fulfilled but has been overthrown by the other Trustees. Sometimes, the Trustees sow chaos on Earth while he is away in the House. The Architect - God figure. Creator of the House and the Secondary realms. Mother of the Mariner and the Piper.Must Be Invited: the Fetchers, although apparently you don't have to own/live in the building to invite them in. Line-of-Sight Name: Arthur, to prevent being noticed, thinks of being soldier " Ray Green" in Sir Thursday from seeing the sun's rays and the forest nearby.

Noons can only stay on Earth from noon to one PM. Logically, Dusks and Dawns are under similar restrictions. Desperate, Arthur escapes to the mysterious house that has appeared in town - a house that only he can see. Maybe there he can unravel the secrets of the key - and discover his true fate. Ichabod: The ship is still mostly the counting house, albeit long-transformed and changed. This room is of the counting house, so it will always be connected somehow. If the passageway falls off, some other way will open. Arthur Penhaglion has wrested five of the Keys from the Trustees of the Will, but gaining the Sixth Key poses a greater challenge than any before.

The Incomparable Gardens – the most important part of the House, a beautiful garden, ruled by Lord Sunday The First Part of the Will, which leads Arthur into a trap (Diligence, opposing Sloth, but without patience). The flip-side of this is that the virtue's overabundance of motivation and dearth of sense is also why it escaped while the others had to be rescued. The Sixth Part (The Raven), represents Kindness, another much friendlier part of the Will that helps Arthur rescue his friends and insists on paying Due to the Dead The Smart Guy: Dr. Scamandros, the only Upper House-trained sorcerer outside the Upper House (until Giac in Lord Sunday), and who often helps Arthur with magic and exposition after this introduction in Drowned Wednesday. Call to Agriculture: The New Nithlings decide that they would rather be farmers than soldiers. Not that they have a choice in the matter.
