About this deal

While thinking of ideas for the book, Ito eventually settled on making a more character-driven narrative, since he had not tried doing one much before. While working on the book, Ito did not know how the story would end, instead opting to piece together the story while following the characters. Characters, 6: Byakuya Kyouka seems much like a blonde version of Tomie from Ito's other works, though with a comparatively lighthearted tone. Men become obsessed with her and tap into their divinity. Many of the characters felt undeveloped outside of their operations as plot devices, but the scope of the story was galactic so this can mostly be forgiven.

It's prime Junji Ito territory - it's scarily over-expressive faces, it's insects that want to be stepped on, it's an insane sect, it's obsessive people, it's bulging eyes and tongues, it's cosmic horror, it's lots and lots of gore. It has something for everyone! Dr. Kurodera, the psychiatrist that treated Kyoko, reveals that he came from the village Kiyokami that got caught in a volcanic eruption sixty years ago. He has a single strand of amigami in his hair, which he hoped would provide insight into treating Kyoko. Brown pointed out that one of Sensor’s characters, Yukio Kurodera, believes he has discovered life’s purpose. “Do you agree with his conclusion?” he asked Ito. “If not, what do you think the purpose of life is?”Sensor details the travels of a reporter named Wataru Tsuchiyado as he follows the trail of Kyoko Byakuya, a mysterious, golden-haired woman with powerful clairvoyance. Byakuya is the lone survivor of a recent eruption from Mt. Sengoku -- a volcano that last erupted 60 years beforehand, wiping out an entire village of psychics. It was this eruption that granted her psychic powers and golden hair, which notably resembles the volcanic glass spewed from the mountain, and made her the target of the maniacal cult leader Kagero Aido. Story, 6: The volume is roughly tied together through the presence of Tsuchiyado Wataru, a journalist seeking information on the mysterious appearance of a golden-haired woman named Byakuya Kyouka. However, the first four chapters roughly felt like one-shots due to their relatively disconnected nature. Each explored a disturbing facet of the lore behind Byakuya Kyouka's appearance and the eruptions at Mount Sengoku. Though I enjoyed them for the most part and the conclusion was mostly

Messianic Archetype: Father Miguel is a leader of oppressed Christians who has long hair and a beard like typical depictions of Jesus, and dies on a cross because of his faith, becoming a martyr for his people. When Brown dryly pointed out that this was somewhat ironic given Ito’s long history scary, frightening images (the legged fish of Gyo, the haunting spirals of Uzumaki and the singular horror icon that is Tomie), Ito countered with his belief that “[ Sensor] may be a story that brings hope.” Pineda, Rafael (August 12, 2019). "Junji Ito's Travelogue of the Succubus Manga Ends". Anime News Network . Retrieved December 22, 2021. Despite having all the usual features of a Junji Ito book - weird horror, weirder women, body horror, and some bonkers imagery only Ito could draw - Sensor is the least interested I’ve been reading any of his work. Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1963, he was inspired from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's comics and thus took an interest in drawing horror comics himself. Nevertheless, upon graduation he trained as a dental technician, and until the early 1990s he juggled his dental career with his increasingly successful hobby — even after being selected as the winner of the prestigious Umezu prize for horror manga.

When Brown asked if he was worried the world has become so scary that it’s hard for his manga to compete, Ito responded “Yes, there have been some horrible incidents lately that make me think real life is scarier than manga. But my manga is far removed from reality and many of them couldn’t happen in real life. So I don’t think it really competes with reality. But eventually, if science develops to a point where we enter a period where things begin to happen that you couldn’t imagine, then I have wondered if that’s maybe the end of my manga. But I hope such a day will not come.”

Why did you think eating a certain food would make your teacher mad at you?” Brown asked. “I didn’t eat ochazuke very often in the morning,” Ito replied, “and it just happened that the morning I did, I got in trouble with my teacher. That happened once and it turned into a jinx.” Near Kiyokami, there’s a volcano, into which Miguel, a Christian missionary is thrown, in keeping with an edict against Christianity during the Edo period in Japan. After that murder, golden hair falls all over the village, for some reason (well, Miguel had golden hair, but beyond that. . . . no real reason, though it would seem the goodness of Miguel showers down on the people. The hair transmits psychic powers to the villagers). (I am not smirking as I write this! One element of Ito's horror is the ludicrous. He likes pulpy campy stuff as much as any horror manga-ka anywhere). Much like Ito's other manga, the story isn't the tightest. This manga in particular, feels almost like a collection of short stories with a small thread connecting them together. With that said, these short stories are rather engaging and up there for me with some of my favorite Ito short stories. The connecting thread between the short stories is Finally, Brown closed by reminding Ito that he’d asked him at last year’s panel if he preferred Freddy or Jason (Ito said Freddy because of his claws) and followed that up by asking who he preferred: Michael Myers or Leatherface. Ito, ruefully admitting that he hasn’t seen Halloween (although he likes John Carpenter’s films a lot), went with Leatherface.

I love Beniko. I think she could be one of his most interesting antagonists if he built her out. The one jumps are with her in the mirror was one of the best scares of the manga. But I didn’t know why she was stalking him or anything so sadly she wasn’t as great as she could’ve been. (Still a fan because love his evil women)Beveridge, Chris (October 5, 2021). "Top 20 Graphic Novels By Units & Dollars For September 2021". The Fandom Post . Retrieved December 22, 2021. This makes for a really inconsistent book, some parts are really creepy, like the suicide bugs from chapter 4, or the Hypnotherapy in chapter 3, but sometimes the manga feels directionless, like during chapter 5. So, this story starts with a young woman, Kyoko Byakuya, feeling drawn to this mountain, Mount Sengoku. Road trip. Arriving at the mountain, she meets a man who has been waiting for her. What? Yeah, the Amagami (angel-hair like cooled lava strands) told him she was coming and she's supposed to bring happiness. Uh huh okay. He leads her (hello? stranger danger!) to his village, Kiyumaki, which lies at the foot of the mountain. Driven to Suicide: One location in the story is a cliff known for suicides, so a family has set up an inn nearby to talk people down. The area is also plagued by hideous insects that jump under people's feet and resemble the bodies of previous suicide victims when squashed. Wataro Tsuchiyado gets a vision of Kyoko throwing herself off the cliff and goes to find her, but when it comes to pass, she does so to lead the suicide bugs off the cliff with her, and she survives the incident. You can really tell that Ito put a lot of work into the art of this series. It features some incredibly grotesque imagery, on par with Ito's best. The art has always been the main draw for me when it comes to Ito's manga, and Sensor delivers in spades.
