Similar schemes are run by Homeshare, a network of charities, operating in 16 countries, including Britain. Elsewhere policymakers are experimenting with incentives to encourage old and young to mix. In cities such as Lyon in France, Deventer in the Netherlands and Cleveland in Ohio, nursing homes or local authorities are offering students free or cheap rent in exchange for helping out with housework.

Social hubs are also great organizers. They’re the ones who rally the neighbors to pull the weeds and plant flowers at the entrance of the subdivision. They’re the ones who get everyone in the office to pitch in for a charity. And they’re the ones who organize the yearly neighborhood cookout. Hubert better get busy! The other characters were also fun to get to know and they all felt purposeful. Hubert Bird has a full life. He and his best friends, Dotty, Dennis, and Harvey, are always up to some kind of shenanigans. This book is filled with happy heartwarming moments but also sad heartbreaking moments that had me sobbing.
