This stiffly upright growing variety has silvery frosted foliage and an intense red-yellow colouration in autumn. The fruits are medium in size and are also frosted. They have a good aroma with a clear acidity. Buddy Blue® is the ideal pollination partner for Pink Lemonade®. A vigorous erect variety, late season, ripening mid-late August. Produces good crops of very large berries that are firm and light-blue in colour. The fruit is one of the largest produced by any blueberry cultivar. Excellent tart flavour.

I got this idea from Intentional by Grace ( See how she rowed Blueberries for Sal here), but instead of using pom poms for blueberries, I used these blue vase filler gems that I had on hand. The adventures of little Sal and the baby bear while hunting for blueberries with their mothers are beautifully illustrated in this classic children’s book. I especially enjoyed the old fashioned quality of the drawings as they capture the spirit of a long gone era.

One of my very favorite picture books is Blueberries for Sal ! Since blueberries are in season in the summer, now is a great time to read it with your little ones. The canning process involves quite a bit of heat and a lot of waiting, so it isn’t my favorite kitchen activity with little ones. I like to imagine Sal’s mother making other blueberry treats too. To get the most from your Blueberry bushes, they should be grown in acidic soil, or if growing in large containers, you should use an iron-rich compost such as Ericaceous. This heavy cropping and hardy soft fruit is easy to grow and can produce huge yields of tasty blueberries, ideal for a large number of uses and can also make a great garden plant. I loved that the numbers were big and clear on each card, and each from was already filled in with little blueberries. We used these to practice counting, number recognition, and one to one correspondence. I actually laminated these cards to use over and over again – which has been really helpful!
