About this deal

The MGO rating system for manuka honey differs from the UMF or unique manuka factor rating system in that it specifically measures the level of a compound called methylglyoxal (MGO). The manuka tree has been known for centuries to have special properties and has long been used in traditional medicine, so perhaps it is no surprise that the honey that is produced from the nectar of the tree should equally have unusual properties. The number on the front of the pot represents the mg per kg of MGO (Methylglyoxal) and the related strength of Antimicrobial Activity, which is known to kill certain types of bacteria. The greater the number, the stronger the Antimicrobial Activity.

When researchers analysed six types of honey, they found that manuka contained the highest levels of antioxidant activity. ‘Manuka’s antibacterial potency comes from the fact it has a higher total number of phenolic compounds, which have an ability to scavenge superoxide free radicals,’ Wakeman says. 4. Assists with wound healing MGO 250+ Manuka Honey is a natural and delicious honey that captures the essence and taste of the natural environment in New Zealand.Rowse Manuka Honey is guaranteed 100% pure and authentic Manuka honey from New Zealand. All our Manuka Honey is tested twice for its authenticity; at source in New Zealand and again on arrival in the UK. Each jar must have a substantial amount of methyglyoxal, or MGO. MGO is the active component in manuka honey which dictates the level of Non-peroxide Activity (NPA) within each jar and this is a unique property of manuka.

Because of Manuka honey’s powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, it is excellent as a topical treatment for damaged skin and is one of the recommended treatments for minor burns. The MRSA bug highlights one problem facing the medical community; bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. Professor Cooper from the University of Wales carried out research on how Manuka honey interacts with bacteria. She found that Manuka honey can actually help antibiotics be more effective and even reverse antibiotic resistence 5. 3. Manuka honey for strep throat Finally, if you’re looking for the ultimate punch against bacteria and other pathogens, we suggest MGO 829+. This honey has superior levels of both antibacterial activity and medicinal properties. MGO 850+, MGO 900+, and MGO 950+ are among the most common grades in this range. MGO, Antibacterial Properties, and the Growing Concern of Antibiotic Resistance

At Healthy and Natural World, our mission is to empower people to take control of their own health by providing comprehensive, practical and well researched information. At this point it is worth noting that some honey is sold as Manuka honey, but only contains a little amount of MG. So, make sure when you buy Manuka honey that it has the UMF trademark on it with the UMF factor. Also, to be classed as Manuka honey, it has to come from New Zealand. What is MGO? Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA) is a bug, which is sometimes known as a hospital super bug. It has developed from the overuse of antibiotics and conventional antibacterial treatments are ineffective. These batches of Monofloral Manuka Honey come from remote regions, such as South Taranaki where we are based, and are of the most premium quality. Our premium quality Manuka Honey includes MGO 829+.

One of the causes of stomach ulcers is a certain type of bacteria known as H. Pylori. These bacteria are also responsible for other types of gastric problems. Research has shown that Manuka honey contains compounds which are effective against H. Pylori 8 . You can find more treatments for H.Pylori in my article on how to treat H. Pylori naturally. 6. Gastric Problems The MGO rating system was pioneered by Manuka Health after the company discovered it was one of the key naturally occurring compounds that make manuka honey special. It’s important to note that the MGO content of Manuka honey changes over time. The MGO concentration initially increases rapidly during the first couple of years after harvest due to the chemical conversion of DHA to MGO. However, as the DHA supply gets used up, the rate of conversion declines. In fact, in honey nearing the end of a five-year shelf life, the MGO concentration begins to drop due to insufficient DHA availability. One common factor in these gastric problems is the Clostridium difficile ( C. diff), bacteria. However, an interesting study published in 2013 showed that Manuka honey is effective at treating infections caused by C. diff bacteria 9. 7. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

The ideal solution to the aforementioned quality assurance problem lies in the UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) grading system. This system offers a more holistic evaluation than just relying on MGO measurement. Genuine Manuka honey from New Zealand bears both a MGO rating and a UMF™ grade. Monofloral Manuka Honey means that it comes solely from the nectar of the Manuka, resulting in a higher MGO rating and more potent health benefits. For Manuka Honey to be classed as Monofloral, the honey must meet a high level of natural markers and a pollen test. See our MGO rated Manuka Honey All of the honey in this jar is Monofloral, which means the majority of the nectar the bees use to create this honey comes from the flower of the Manuka bush, a bush native to New Zealand. This results in a higher concentration of the compounds that gives Manuka honey it’s distinct taste, colour and reputation. Scientific research into the healing properties of Manuka honey has established that it certainly is a powerful antibacterial agent.

It’s not just anecdotal evidence that point to the fact that Manuka honey can help soothe a sore throat, research has also shown that it can actually cure a sore throat as it can inhibit the bacteria causing a strep throat 6. You can find more natural remedies for strep throat in my previous article. 4. Wound, Burns, and Skin Ulcers The benefits of Manuka honey have been celebrated for centuries, including soothing sore throats and supporting general wellness. It was the indigenous people of New Zealand, the home of Manuka Honey, who, thousands of years ago, first recognised its healing properties and today it is appreciated all over the world. Many of Manuka’s healthful attributes are thought to relate to its major antibacterial component, methylglyoxal (MGO). Even though MGO is found in most types of honey, it’s usually in much smaller quantities. In manuka honey, MGO comes from the conversion of a compound called dihydroxyacetone, which is found in high concentration in manuka flowers. The higher the concentration of MGO, the stronger the antibiotic effect. ‘Researchers have found that manuka honey has a higher antibacterial activity against various strains of bacteria, with a stronger effect coming from manuka honey with higher MGO levels,’ says Wakeman. 3. High in antioxidants Let’s look at the many uses and health benefits of Manuka honey and how it can be used as a natural treatment for many ailments. 1. Manuka honey has strong antibacterial properties

Independently verified and scientifically tested to ensure the MGO rating, this is all natural Monofloral Manuka honey from the foothills of Mt Egmont, Taranaki. An imbalance of bacteria in the stomach and intestines and also having low stomach acid can cause various gastric problems like diarrhea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. In some cases this is caused by a condition called Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) which is an increase in the number of bacteria, and/or changes in the types of bacteria present in the small bowel. Methylglyoxal (MG). A powerful antibiotic compound which is found in large quantities in Manuka honey. Additionally, manuka honey has been shown to fight the bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections – the symptoms of which may include a cough, sore throat, a stuffy or running nose and sneezing– in people with cystic fibrosis. And in a study from the University of Washington, it was found to be just as effective as saline nasal irrigation at relieving the symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis (and far more pleasant, too!). 7. May protect against stomach ulcers
