Is shooting Portra or 35mm in general ‘worth it’? Marseille. Film Leica M6, 35mm Leica Summicron ASPH, Kodak Portra 400 The question now then is, how much does it deserve this simultaneous idolatry and infamy? Is it really that much better than other films? I’m sure some of its popularity is down to people following the crowd too, but to what extent?

Indoors with a flashNow this set was done with a Canon 580 EX II attached to a Canon 1V and using Zeiss and Sigma lenses. Sigma’s older 85mm f1.4 (non-art) did a great job here when blending the ambient light and the daylight output of the flash being bounced off of a ceiling.The same streamlining happened with the ISO 160 Portra a year later, while the ISO 800 Portra was only ever available in a single version anyway. Hi Simon, nicely done! I’m really loving the first and second images. I’m guessing the higher contrast is from the push processing. Love the look! When you rate Portra at 200 you are overexposing the film and basically telling the film to let more light in. When you rate lower than box speed you do not need to tell your film lab. You only need to notify your lab when you are pushing your film to a higher iso (800, 1600 etc) so that they can leave the film in the developer for longer. All that said though, does it really matter? It’s a point worth mentioning because it’s a real phenomenon and I couldn’t write this review without bringing it up. It’s not something worth preaching about though. You can shoot what you want. Its easier to keep a consistent aesthetic when shooting color film than with digital. Digital JPEG presets, filters, and RAW post-processing is constantly changing and evolving.

When you’re shooting your Portra 400, be aware that it’s one of the most forgiving films out there as far as exposure latitude goes. It’s supposed to deliver usable results at two stops over or two stops under, which means shooting anywhere between ISO 100 to 1600 without pulling or pushing. Shot with Kodak Portra 120. Outdoors during daylightKodak Portra likes daylight: so that means always ensuring it’s around. If you’re shooting with it at night or around Tungsten/Incandescent lighting you’re going to get very orange tones to the scenes you photograph. If you’re shooting in cloudy situations, I also highly recommend using a flash unless your lab is very good at fixing colors. Best-in-class underexposure latitude?no other colour film gives you so much latitude (-2 to +3 stops) so you can shoot with confidence even under challenging lighting conditions. I don’t currently develop any of my own C41 film, so I had to find a lab which would be happy to push my film chemically – not as easy as I thought it would be. I eventually found a place in Hatton Garden, and have never been disappointed in the results.
