About this deal

I really enjoyed Amy Snow. Set in the 1800's, it is the story of 2 girls and told between past and present. Both through Amy and letters from Aurelia. The premise of the story reminded me of the styling of Kate Morton. Historical fiction, past and present, a family secret and the dead leading the living through letters. The clues Amy finds (some of which take time to figure out) lead her around the country, introduce her to fascinating people, and prove that the kindness, love, and the family life she craves exist outside of Aurelia’s sheltering wings. Along the way, she learns surprising revelations about Aurelia and a lot about herself. Amy’s journey – and, consequently, the novel’s structure – may be contrived, but the author wisely makes her aware of it. The obligations of her mission chafe from time to time, as does her burden of secrecy, especially when enticing alternatives present themselves. Your narrative examines the many challenges facing women of that era through a series of strong female characters. Is it fair to say that Amy’s personal development involves an increased awareness of the social inequality faced by women? For those who know my pet-peeve with novels set in the Victorian era, Queen Victoria doesn't make a appearance but she's referenced frequently at the beginning.

Amy Snow by Tracy Rees | Waterstones

How do the mysterious circumstances surrounding Amy’s birth link her to the Vennaway family? Given Lady Celestina’s tragic history of miscarriages, why do she and her husband prefer to turn Amy over to an orphanage rather than rear her as their child? Rees writes lyrically and listening to the audio was a sheer pleasure. I was transported to the English countryside and moors of York as Amy Snow traversed the land on a "treasure hunt" of Aurelia's design to uncover her friend's deepest secrets. What aspects of Aurelia’s affluent upbringing does she accept and what does she reject? What does her rescue of Amy against the wishes of her parents indicate about her? How would you describe Aurelia’s relationship with her parents? Henry Mead describes his own uncertain progress into adulthood in terms that practically echo Amy’s description of herself as a carriage being driven by Aurelia’s wishes. Are you attracted as a writer to the themes of metamorphosis and reinvention? The Rose and Crown will suffice. The chat in the lounge may not be the most refined for a young lady with a mind to her reputation, but then I am no lady; this has been made abundantly clear to me.

Reluctantly given shelter at nearby Hatville Court, she is despised by the masters and servants alike.

How does Amy’s journey to York alter her grief for Aurelia? What does the Louis Josslyn Capland represent to Amy ? How does her encounter with Louis and her implicit obligation to him, bring Amy’s relationship with Aurelia full circle? You have said that you write fiction “without a detailed plan.” Does your process involve any mapping out of plot, or does that, too, develop organically as you go?

Oh yes! The best thing about being published is that I get to keep writing. I never feel fully at my happiest when I’m not. Quercus, my UK publishers, have offered me a further two-book contract, to my utter joy. I’ve just delivered the manuscript for my second book, which is due to be published in the UK in summer 2016, and book three will follow a year later. There was plenty of mystery and intrigue throughout, which mixed well with Amy and her experiences of travelling around the country on her own as a woman, and finding people who knew Aurelia and didn't judge Amy because of her past and accepted her for who she was.Everything in this story is neatly tied up. There was a moment that I feared so much that this one important thread about Amy won't be explained, but I needn't, of course, Tracy wouldn't leave us dangling like this! It's a very complex story, so thought through, and my hats go off to Tracy and her talent to plot and hatch in this way! Yes, I am jealous, as I was never any good in treasure hunts, sadly, but Amy here made me so proud! It's January 1831. The book follows the story of Amy Snow, starting when young Aurelia finds Amy as a new - born baby, being left to death in the snow - hence her name, Snow. As Aurelia is the only Vennaway family's daughter, and she's very hard - minded, Amy is allowed to stay - in the kitchen, help to everyone. For Aurelia she stays her best friend, and the girls share a lot of secrets, spent a lot of time together, even if Aurelia's parents neither want to hear about Amy nor see her.
