About this deal

To be sure of being able to transmit from anywhere you take the lot - transceiver, battery antenna coupler, mast and wire. But it can be fun (and lighter) to just take the rig, battery preferred as some of the earlier '817s blew their final amplifiers. You can recognise an ND model by its choice of If you don’t want the radio to charge the cells in any way then you need the green wire connecting. default setting (at least on my rig) was not ideal. Not that most users would notice since few would use it on AM mode, but you might as well have it right, especially since the settings can be done from the three (rather than two) screen lighting colours. The difference between the FT-817ND and FT-818 is negligible; if you already own an '817 you wouldn't buy an '818.

To see how low you can go you need an RF attenuator. Try it and see what you can do with 20 milliwatts or less. This might not be what you want to hear, if you are not a fan of CW. But in my experience people who are not CW fans don't like the mode because they find it too difficult to use - because they didn't learn it properly. For years I resented the need to learn CW and never used it after I passed the test - until I got interested in QRP and realized the benefits of it. Becoming competent at CW can be hard, but it really repays the effort. If you aren't there yet, I have a couple of programs that will help you get your speed up. MorseGen is the ideal code practice generator, while if you want learning to be a bit more fun, to give you more incentive to practice regularly try MorseTest. CW filter The bad points outnumber the good points. Whilst some allowance must be made for the FT-817's small size and portability, especially with regard to ergonomics, several of these criticisms could have been averted using existing technology.Poor receiver. A contest-grade receiver isn't expected nor required in a radio of this type, but the FT-817's receiver seems poorer than it need be. Even using an inefficient short whip, strong local stations can overload it. The main problem seems to be bleedover (apologies for the CB term, but it sounds just like a cheap CB radio) due to the inadequate IF filter fitted. A better filter is available as a (pretty expensive) option, but you can only fit one accessory filter, which is a problem if you want a narrow filter for CW. I have the Turnigy charger which is similar in look to the one Andy mentioned and that works well too. An FT-817/FT-818 is just the thing to take to an island to do some QRP portable. From a quiet spot you'll be able to work stations (especially other QRPers) you can't hear from home. And I hear stories about the volatile nature of 18650s so I am leery about making this without talking to someone who has already successfully built and used one. It seems that LiFePo4 are the better solution nowadays (more charging cycles and more stable) but I own a cheaper LiPo 3 cell 11,1 Volt 2,2Ah and it keeps running all right with me since 3 years now. I can run my 817 during 2 hours full activation without an issue. The Yaesu FT-817ND is the world’s first self-contained, battery-powered, multi-mode portable transceiver covering the HF, VHF, and UHF bands,For more than four decades, Yaesu has been a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance multi-mode base station and mobile transceivers, as well as FM hand held.Welcome to Reddit's own amateur (ham) radio club. If you are wondering what Amateur Radio is about, it's basically a two way radio service where licensed operators throughout the world experiment and communicate with each other on frequencies reserved for license holders. The FT-817/FT-818's internal microphone is OK but not great. And if you're running low power you want the punchiest transmit audio possible. The difference doesn't look that great. That's partly because the AGC in the receiver used to make the recording has brought the signals up to a similar level. But you can see that there is less difference between peaks and minimums in the compressed oscillogram. Each syllable looks (and sounds) clearer. I use a Zippy 8400 mAh 4S2P LiFePo4. Great for all radio types, loads of capacity, never emptied on FT817, just under 2 hours on FT450D at 100 Watts SSB. For info: Portable battery choices | VK3ZPF Ham Radio Blog

can decode (and who decodes you). Or if you wish to send pictures slow scan TV has mobile phone apps that you can use in conjunction with an FT-817/FT-818. You probably do want an external charge connector so that you can balance the cells from time to time, and possibly charge them faster than the FT-817 can. But I see no harm in letting the radio charge them. It will provide a useful and convenient top-up charge. Clearly you mustn’t use both charging methods at the same time (I presume this is why the battery tray that started this thread provides a switch). To make the most of the enhanced conditions put together a portable 'grab and go' station so you can be out pedestrian mobile at a moment's notice. This includes your FT-817/FT-818, a battery suitable forSo have you used the 3D Printed, 18650-filled version that is featured at the top of this forum? I did see that I could buy like a windcamp lipo that fits there fine, but I like the idea of using 18650s because I have a pile of them. Bob K6XX identified the problem early and suggests a small changes to the carrier level setting. I made the adjustment as suggested and can confirm it

All-band" coverage. The FT-817 covers all amateur bands from Top Band to 70cm (excluding the UK-only 4m band and the US-only 222MHz band.) It also has pretty extensive general coverage capabilities. This makes it an ideal "do-anything" radio, suitable for whatever kind of operation you feel like doing. I have 2 of the Zippy LiFePO4 4200mAh and find them pretty good. I get about 5-6 hours out of 1 on my 817 and weigh 480gm each and a decent size (you can fit 3 or 4 lengthways on an 817). enjoy the novelty of working a pedestrian mobile station >1000km away as much as you did working them.Poor ergonomics. Many commonly used functions are accessed from one of the three buttons below the display, which have about 11 different sets of functions. This means a lot of button pressing and knob twiddling just to do something like turn the noise blanker on or off, change the output power or toggle the meter between SWR and power out. Although to a great extent this problem is inevitable given the small size of the 817's front panel, I'm sure Yaesu could have fitted a slightly bigger LCD panel, with less of a surround, and this could at least allow the current selection of the three buttons to be permanently displayed. Perhaps some functions could have been made accessible from a key-pad mike, as well? Direct frequency input would have been nice. Initially met with a mix of incredulity and suspicion when it came out in 2000, the Yaesu FT-817 series transceiver has become the company's A valid product review is one where you have experience or knowledge of the product that you would like to share with others.
