You like an easy-to-use camera: An intuitive interface with easy buttons makes the TG-6 simple to operate. The modular system is strong and has immense gadget value (though can get a bit hot when charging), while DJI’s Mimo app makes control via your phone painless.It's a bit sad that DJI's more recent Action 3 (also in this list) adopted a more traditional GoPro-like shape. But if you're happy with this 4K device, there is an interesting world of accessories (as well as adaptors for the traditional ‘GoPro’ style devices), making this a hard option to overlook, especially where a small subscription-free camera is the goal.

A hardcore compact camera that’s built for action, the Olympus Tough TG-6 has some of the best durability specs in this list, and still shoots decent 4K footage at 30fps. When I first used the Xiaomi Mi Band, the companion app was poor. After a year it had transformed so much I didn’t recognise the original. The Mi Sphere App is starting off well, so can only get better!You want the best image quality: A small sensor limits quality, with overexposure and telephoto softness issues too. Ok, so I’d be lying if I said the MiJia had more vivid colours than the GoPro, but it holds it’s own all the same and offers a higher level of detail.

Overall, I found installing the software cumbersome but, once installed, easy and intuitive to use. There is a manual, and the options on the live feed to change the filming style are straight forward. What’s promising is that Xiaomi are providing lots of updates the camera firmware and also the app. Filming 360 video is very easy but becomes time intensive during the editing process as it’s all mobile based. This is, in part, due to 360 technology being relatively new with no universal standard. That being said, the final 360 result is more than worth it and the included export options, whilst slow, work well.
You’ll also need two of them for full 360 video immersion, which will cost over double the Xiaomi MiJia 360. You can also view your videos after you’ve shot it on the device. you don’t need to carry your laptop around or do re-shoots the next day. Although it maxes-out at 4K/30fps, Sony's 4K shooter does have some unique features, most notably a smart-watch contraption that allows a remote live view, and control. It's also got almost dream-like image stabilization. Inside is the same 12MP Sony IMX377 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with Exmor R as on the Yi 4K, but this version has a new Ambarella H2 + Quad-core ARM Cortex A53 processor. They work terrifically well together, allowing the Yi 4K+'s operating system to work fluently and without a hitch despite the bigger bitrate.

These 360 photos look fantastic and can be edited to your heart’s content via the Mi Sphere app. You also have to option to create tiny world photos like the one above that look great. Should you want to upload a 360 photo to Facebook you have the option to export them by using the in-app share button. Swipe Right and you’ll see all the camera modes such as time-lapse video, slow motion and loop record. The Xiaomi Mijia 4K Action Camera has a beautiful metal frame with a nice finish – a quality texture plastic of sorts. This texture feels great in your hands and it makes it look premium. Control– Do you need a screen to control the camera, or will you be happy using your phone? Will you have to take gloves on and off to start shooting while keeping your feet in snowboard bindings?

Elsewhere, features remain mostly the same as the Action 3, already one of our favorite action cameras. It retains the same small but rugged build, removable battery and versatile magnetic mounting system that we liked so much the first time. Waterproofing is boosted to an even more impressive 18m without a case, making it a winner for watersports. However, what is annoying – and it's exactly the same with all GoPro products – is a short battery life. The Yi 4K+ has a 1400mAh battery that lasts for just over an hour in 4K mode, a little longer if not. A small, portable and money-saving design You want to shoot flat footage: Designed for 360, the Max's 2D shooting modes can't compete with single-lens rivals. You prefer your smartphone: If you're happy to shoot with your phone, you'll be better off with the DJI OM 5 gimbal.
