About this deal

In 1911, the United States Golf Association (Men) of the day laid down the following very modern distances for determining par: Up to 225 yards

Holing out from off the green without using your putter. Golden ferrets are for holing out from a bunker and count double. Birdies & Eagles

Rule 6-6d Wrong Score for Hole, i.e., when the recorded score is lower than actually taken, except that no penalty is incurred when a breach of this Rule does not affect the result of the hole In Stableford competition, a point value is assigned for different scores on a hole (e.g., birdie, par, bogey). The player with the highest point total wins. As well as your main event have a few side bets to keep interest up. Decide your own value for units and don't get carried away. It's meant to be fun not financially life threatening! Oozles & Foozles No standard terms for 2 or 3 or more over Par have emerged. They are just double and triple Bogeys. Depending upon how good you are, anything over 7, 8 or 9 will be a ‘Blow-up’ or a ‘Disaster’.

For course rating purposes, a handicap for a bogey golfer lies somewhere between 17.5 – 22.4 for men and 21.5 to 26.4 for women. Golfing condors have been recorded six times around the world over the last 60 years in the USA, the UK and Australia. Until 2020, they were all par-5 'aces'. More details can be found here. Slice: A “slice” is when your golf ball curves severely to your strong side (right side for righties, left side for lefties), tailing or “slicing” away from your intended target. It is one of the most common and frustrating swing faults, usually caused by an outside-in swing. A competitor is disqualified from the competition if he incurs a penalty of disqualification under any of the following: Rule 1-3 Agreement to Waive Rules If it’s the same, the hole is tied. If it’s higher then you lose the hole. If you don’t return a score on a hole, or don’t hole out, you lose the hole. Simple, right?

Other golf terms to know

The tournament committee can set pace-of-play guidelines imposing maximum times to play a shot, hole or round. In this case, a first violation brings a one-point penalty; a second violation earns an additional two-point penalty; a third violation results in disqualification. Two players form a team and hit alternate shots at each hole until they hole out. One player tees off at the even holes and one on the odd holes. Handicap allowance is half of the combined total of both players. Played to strict rules of matchplay golf! Greensomes Most 18-hole golf courses have a par of 72 and feature a mix of Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 holes to achieve that total. Indeed, you can play it that way, but the OP stated 'for handicap purpose' which requires holing out.

Broadly, the term par means the number of strokes for any given hole, or for a collection of holes (9 or 18) it should take a golfer to get the ball into the hole from start to finish. Each individual golf hole is a Par 3, Par 4, or Par 5. Jim and Bob are playing golf together and both players score a 5 on the par 4 first hole. Jim hits his first shot 250 yds down the middle of the fairway and his second shot lands on the green 10’ from the hole. Bob meanwhile, hooks his first shot left into the trees 150 yds away. If you like risky games, you'll love this. Each team of two add their scores together, so if they both had fours the score is 44. If the scores were different then the scoring depends on how you fared to par. If one of you got a par or better you would take the lower score first. For example a 4 and 6 on a par 5 scores 46. If you are both above par, say on a par three, then you take the higher score first giving 64. The lower total takes the money, but be prepared for some big swings.

Note: Bogey, par and Stableford are competitions played under the stroke play format, with each player competing against a fixed score for each hole. The player with the most “wins” during the competition is the winner, as in match play. Bogey or Bust is the name of a golf game that is most often played as a side bet by buddies in a group of four, or as a bonus pool within a tournament. A scratch golfer is a golfer that averages close to a score of par on each hole. Shooting par is very hard and requires a lot of skill, patience, and dedication to constantly refining one’s golf swing and strategy for playing the game. When you have a four arranged, someone always calls off and who wants to play strokeplay anyway? Have fun with these instead: Skins The biggest difference between the type of par for any hole is the length. Par 3 holes vary in length from 75-250 yds. Par 4 holes vary in length from 200-500 yds and par 5 holes vary between 400-650 yds.

This is a game of Fourball Better Ball matchplay (see below), but with 3 real players and one imaginary player called the Ghost. One player elects to play with the Ghost who always pars every hole. The Ghost plays off scratch and gives shots to every other player in the group as per normal. The game is usually best when the highest handicapper plays with the Ghost. Make More Short Putts– This one is obvious but there is a reason why PGA Tour golfers spend so much time on the putting green. For bogey golfers to get better, they need to make more putts inside 10’. Start by making 20 3’ putts in a row then make 50, then make 20 4’ putts, and then another 50. Focus on keeping your head still and let your ears listen for the ball to go in the hole rather than your eyes following the ball as it rolls.

1 Player Golf Formats

You win and lose holes, as you would in match play, by comparing the number of strokes taken for a hole against the fixed target score set by the committee. A competitor who breaks Rule 6-3a (Time of Starting) by showing up late, but is on the tee and ready within five minutes of his tee time, loses two points from his total. The same applies if a player breaks Rule 6-7 (Undue Delay; Slow Play). As per Texas scramble but the worst shot is selected. Beware, as everyone has to hole out for a hole to be completed! Best played over nine holes or you'll never finish in daylight. Bisque
