About this deal

We assessed how easy each pulp container was to empty and how easy it was to handwash, using any supplied cleaning brushes when doing so. Switching on the Philips HR1889, you’ll hear a high-pitched bleep before the motor springs into action, making the screw turn inside the juicing unit. Compact, but long and narrow in shape, with its feed tube protruding, the Philips HR1889 Viva looks similar to many other smaller masticating machines. The machine produced some amusing squeaking sounds while processing the leafy greens, but that is just part of the process and still more pleasant to the ear than the drill-like noise of some centrifugal juicers.

Large feed chutes Some of the easiest juicers to use have extra-large feeding tubes that you can fit whole apples and oranges down. This saves time, as you don't have to pre-chop all your ingredients. A handy drip-stop means the juicing bowl can be sealed without spillage. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water. Loud - this product has been scientifically assessed and found to be louder than most in this category. Vegetables were another surprise, I especially was fearful of the performance with something like a carrot, but it was no where near a problem. Firm vegetables producced wonderful "clean" juices, virtually no material other than juice. I find myself creating more vegetables drinks with this machine than I had with any of my previous machines. The feed chute is 8cm in diameter, which is wide enough not to require much preparatory chopping. The transparent plunger, feed tube and juicer lid enable you to observe the entire juicing process. Even the pulp bin is transparent, meaning you can assess its fullness without disassembling the machine.

We found the best juicer machines to be a breeze to use, with wide chutes to put whole apples and oranges down. Juicing carrots was probably the noisiest process here, producing a sound akin to a chair being dragged across a hard floor. In addition to its compact size, taking up 296 x 250mm of your worktop space (without the jug attached), the Avance HR1922 looks pleasantly futuristic. The juicer’s shape is reminiscent of a large curvy bottle, further helped by the fact that most of its removable juicing parts are made of transparent plastic. Cleaning the Avance HR1922 is made easy because of the pre-clean rinsing function. By pouring water into the hollow plunger and turning the juicer on setting 2, you can rinse out the juicer lid, the steel blades and the micro-mesh filter.

If there's a gotcha in this Philips Avance it is the effectiveness of the unit: it doesn't seem to get all the juice out of the fruit, and while the masticating section gets additional content, it still seems to leave about a third of the fruit and juice untouched. Philips claims the Philips Avance reaches 80% efficiency, but that seems a bit optimistic. To see how effective the juicer was, I ran three similarly-sized oranges through the Avance and then three through my son's fancy expensive juicer. The fancy unit got about a quarter more juice from those orange parts. But, as my son pointed out, oranges are relatively cheap, the Philips Avance is a third to a quarter the price of his professional juicer, and cleanup of his juicer takes ten minutes compared to less than two minutes for the Avance. Good points all. And, as he says, I can always pass the pulp through again for the last few drops if I want to (it makes a mess doing so...I tried!).We also rated how easy it was to get food down the chute and whether the juicer dripped after juicing. I started by making the ‘Green Eyecatcher’ with cucumber, spinach, water and honey. The feed tube was quite narrow, so the cucumber had to be halved to fit in the chute; even then, pushing it through required some effort. It produced a good amount of juice and minimal, relatively dry pulp. Similarly, the spinach went through well, leaving little residue inside the juicing unit – although this may have been a result of the water washing it through to finish. Two buttons sit at the top of the machine: one for turning the juicer on and off, the other for the reverse function, which needs to be held down should any fruit or veg become lodged during the juicing process.

Setting up this juicer, I wondered how much it could fit. The answer is more than enough. At 2.1 litres, the pulp container isn’t the biggest on the market, but it’s plenty big enough, with Philips claiming you can juice up to 3 litres before having to empty it. If anything, you’ll have to get another jug first, since the standard jug can accommodate only 1 litre of juice. The Philips Avance Collection HR1875 is a centifugal juice extractor with a powerful 1000 watt motor and two speeds for processing hard and soft fruits. It has a 8cm wide feed tube and 1.6 pulp container. The parts are dishwasher safe and the sieve has an easy to clean surface. This method enables you to juice directly into a glass or the lidded jug that’s included. Since there’s no sieve, there are no parts that can become clogged. A final clever feature is the one-metre cord, which winds around the machine once you’re finished. Plus, there’s space inside the pulp container to store the tray, pusher and juice jug.

It may seem a little obvious, but a slow juicer is exactly what its name suggests. It is a special form of juice press which slowly cuts fruit and veg into small pieces and squeezes all of the juice from them. The Philips slow juicers not only squeeze the fruit but also extract juice from the fruit pulp. A bit of pressure was needed to juice the carrots and apples, especially when half of an apple ended up core side down. Two-thirds of a large cucumber made the juicer wobble a little, but it was sturdy enough to take it. The resulting juice was fibrous and tasty. The drink was quite frothy, probably down to the fact that there’s no separator to reduce the foam on top. With honey added, the drink was inoffensive but not particularly pleasant – it would have benefitted from including fruit. Masticating juicers – those that ‘chew’ fruit and veg rather than shred and spin it – have traditionally been unwieldy machines that require dedication when it comes to cleaning. However, the Avance is different, with much of its design geared towards minimal maintenance and ease of use.

The worst? They were fiddly, felt overengineered and require ingredients to be chopped up into tiny pieces first to squeeze down the food chute. Cleaning
