The combination of Veritas and Spohn created some of the most distinct German sports cars of the period. Fully fuelled and with plenty of options on board, our test car weighed 1698kg on the scales, making Maranello’s claim realistic enough. And it’s a claim that gives this car a power-to-weight ratio of 629bhp per tonne – right up in the territory of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and LaFerrari, if not quite on terms with the very latest all-electric hypercars from Lotus and Rimac. Veritas' first customer was legendary racing driver Karl Kling, who promptly won his first event in 1947, and secured the 2-litre sports car championship that same year. Soon the grids were filled with Veritas racers, and buyers pushed for road-going versions. Dietrich was happy to oblige, and in 1949 offered a series of production road cars with BMW running gear, lightweight tubular chassis, and coupé, cabriolet, or sports roadster coachwork by the well-known firm Hermann Spohn Karosseriebau. Total weight (with lightweight options fitted) is 1,570kg, which is 240kg more than the F8 Tributo. But thanks to its extra power and torque, plus the front axle’s torque-vectoring system, the SF90 disguises its weight extremely well. It also boasts brilliant damping that offers supreme body control combined with impressive suppleness. The car’s drive battery actually marks the limit of its power generation capabilities: it can only supply enough energy to coax a combined 242bhp from those threeelectric motors at any one time. In general running, the hybrid system as a whole is limited to a peak power output of 217bhp. Between all four power sources, the SF90 makes a homologated 987bhp at 7500rpm and an undisclosed amount of torque. (That said, in its fiercest ‘Qualify’ driving mode, it can actually produce slightly more power than that, if only for a short period of time.)
