She balled her hands into her pockets, and leant back, her feet apart; she looked rooted, immovable. When you turn and look back down the years, you glimpse the ghosts of other lives you might have led; all houses are haunted.

On receiving the prize, Mantel said that she would spend the prize money on "sex and drugs and rock' n' roll". She followed Every Day Is Mother’s Day with a sequel, Vacant Possession; you didn’t have to have read the first, which existed only to give the author ingredients for her new devilish arrangements.During her university years, Mantel identified as a socialist, and was a member of the Young Communist League. We might seem a long way from the suburban gothic of Mantel’s debut, but listen and you can hear the same skill, the same unnerving ear for human contest. The Saudi Arabian city provided the setting for her third novel, Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, and drew on her time being posted there with her husband, Gerald McEwan, a geologist she met at the University of Sheffield in the 1970s. But other physical responses, such as a slowed heart rate and relaxed muscles, indicate other emotions such as peacefulness and relaxation. She does not give the impression of harbouring self-pity, even as she includes herself among those who "have had the roots of their personality torn up".

Many cognitive theories of emotion emerged during the 1960s, as part of what is often referred to as the "cognitive revolution" in psychology. One of the earliest of these cognitive theories was one proposed by Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer, known as the two-factor theory of emotion.Each of her novels is a new world, freshly imagined in a special language, but in every one the twists of human desire and fear are exactly charted. There are those who have a natural, in-built, expectation of happiness, and there are those who feel that happiness is not to be expected: that it is not, in fact, one of the rights of man.

By then she had published two novels - Every Day Is Mother's Day and Vacant Possession - and the much-revised French revolution novel in the drawer, but it was writing about Saudi Arabia, both in her essay and the novel that followed, that helped to bring her before a wider public. A couple of years earlier Mantel had published a huge historical novel, A Place of Greater Safety, that now looks like invaluable groundwork for her Thomas Cromwell books, but at the time seemed out of the path of her other fiction. It is also one of those stories that begin full of optimism and hope, but as the narrative progresses, becomes tinged with melancholia and tragedy. A Change of Climate (1994), set in rural Norfolk, explores the lives of Ralph and Anna Eldred, as they raise their four children and devote their lives to charity.

Mantel’s characters tend to have, as we say, their demons, and the temporal shifts of this novel are devised, in true Mantelian manner, to show us how these good people are haunted by their hardly repressed memories of evil. In the example above, the dark, lonely setting and the sudden presence of an ominous stranger contributes to the identification of the emotion as fear. The controversial title story is about an assassin who disguises himself as a plumber and takes over an apartment opposite the hospital where the Prime Minister is undergoing eye surgery. A group of 184 male participants was injected with epinephrine, a hormone that produces arousal including increased heartbeat, trembling, and rapid breathing.

It’s a rough if quietly internalised induction into adult life for all the girls, and the few terms they spend together threaten to leave a permanent mark on their young lives. It was not much noticed when it appeared but is now back in print in the slipstream of her two Man Booker wins. In other words, the experience of emotion involves first having some kind of physiological response which the mind then identifies.Some of the other structures that contribute to the reward circuit—the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex—are exceptionally sensitive to (and reinforcing of) behavior that induces pleasure, such as sex, food consumption, and drug use.
