About this deal

This trilogy belongs in any collection, especially now that it has been given the 4K treatment, and if it has been more than a few years since you’ve watched these films, they make for a terrific movie weekend. And on UHD, Wally Pfister's photography is spectacularly beautiful and striking with richly-saturated primaries throughout, such as the Joker's more vivid red makeup being distinctly different from the more crimson shade of blood. We first popped in the 1080p Blu-ray of The Dark Knight to compare to the new 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray release and it renders far superior color range. Explosions, gun shots, and vehicle crashes—of which there are plenty across the three films—also have plenty of authority and weight, with your subwoofers definitely energizing the room to tactile levels. Reading reviews can provide a fantastic alternative to being able to actually see and try the product for yourself.

While overall resolution was very good in the standard footage scenes, it occasionally softened, leaving some scenes appearing better resolved than others. It's an ensemble cast, but it's Nolan's - and Bale's - baby, finely-tuning the flashback-centric dip into the events that changed the course of young Bruce Wayne's life, and his work to become Batman, taking a hell of a lot of material from the excellent Frank Miller comic Batman: Year One and fashioning it into a pulsing, brooding animal of a superhero movie, hard-edged and gritty (so much so that even audiences averse to traditional superhero flicks embraced it), with a fabulous visual aesthetic and a brutal heartbeat of a score from Hans Zimmer. I actually like the aspect ratio switching, but there were times I almost wished the whole film was shot with the IMAX camera.I found the script to be slightly uneven and overlong as it dealt with Bruce’s excursion to the pit while he sorted out the true meaning of life, death and that conquering fear alone wasn’t enough if he was going to rise from the remains left of him by the indomitable Bane. The oldest film in the trilogy is of course going to feature the worst video quality and subsequently receive the most scrutiny.

However, I did enjoy the cohesiveness of the narrative as it pertained to Bruce’s reemergence, facing a foe unlike any other, and the superbly integrated subplots revolving around Blake and Selina. Warner’s 4K release delivers the film in its best-ever quality, with a striking image and reference grade audio. On top of that he must now contend with The Joker who is unlike anything he has dealt with previously.
