Taking Labelle's disco-era hit Lady Marmalade as its inspiration, this matched Step On in terms of chart success and gave new recruit Rowetta a moment in the spotlight. The band toured extensively in the UK and internationally, selling out the 20,000 capacity Manchester Arena and two nights at Brixton Academy, and released a new single, a cover version of the Thin Lizzy hit "The Boys Are Back in Town". from 2004 to 2006 the band were managed by Danny Newman, MD at London Club Turnmills brother of London Club DJ Tall Paul. But once their origin story was immortalized in Michael Winterbottom’s 2002 film, 24 Hour Party People, the Mondays embarked on a 21st-century comeback that yielded their first album in 15 years, 2007’s Uncle Dysfunktional. Little did Shaun Ryder and his late brother Paul (who died in July) realise, but their group would become one of the pioneers of what became the " Madchester" or "baggy" sound.

Originally part of the Madchester Rave On EP in November 1989, complete with the much-missed Kirsty MacColl on backing vocals, this tune was reworked and remixed by Paul Oakenfold and Andy Weatherall to become one of the key dance tunes of the baggy era. They provided support for Oasis on their "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" arena tour, played at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, numerous European festivals including T in the Park and also toured Australia the same year. They experienced their commercial peak with the releases Bummed (1988), Madchester Rave On (1989), and Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches (1990), with the last going platinum in the UK.The first verse is reportedly about the troubled record producer Martin Hannett, who'd worked with Joy Division and ended up at the desk for Happy Monday's second outing Bummed. The band went on to play gigs in Chile and Argentina in May 2012 and then a number of European festivals in the summer of 2012, including Ireland's Sea Sessions, Scotland's T in the Park, the band were headliners at Camp Bestival in Dorset in July 2012 and they performed at the V Festivals in August 2012.

Paul Ryder was not present, having sworn to never perform with his brother again following the 2000 break-up, [20] and formed his own band Big Arm. Other dates include a show at Troxy in London on April 6, Liverpool's Mountford Hall on April 13 and a show at the Brighton Dome on April 14 to finish off the tour. Surprisingly, the title track 24 Hour Party People wasn't on the LP, but when one song was dropped for legal reasons, this storming tribute to hedonism was inserted in its place.

During the Been There Done That Tour, the band will be joined by fellow 1990s music artists Inspiral Carpets and Stereo MCs.
